Last year a film was released called "The Quiet", a motion picture I gave a great review and found to be very inventive and very enjoyable. It was directed by a woman named Jamie Babbit, the gal behind the cult hit, "But I'm A Cheerleader". When I found out she had another film touring the festival circuit and that it was in consideration for Birmingham SHOUT, I was elated. I am a fan of her work. When I screened the film, I could definitely see the same style that I remembered from her previous two films. She has a unique storytelling style and "Itty Bitty Titty Committee" is lucky to have that style at its disposal. Babbit was probably the perfect choice for the film.

The film follows Anna (Melondie Diaz), a young Hispanic girl who is just trying to find her own way. She has just broke up with her girlfriend and works at the local breast augmentation clinic when she meets the very persuasive Sadie (Nicole Vicius). Sadie is the leader of a group of very radical feminists who want to spread women's rights across the world, and this turns out to be the perfect group for Anna to join. The film is about Anna and her struggles for acceptance, her growing affection for Sadie, and the affect that has on the rest of the group. The story is actually pretty cookie cutter, but it handles it in a very Rambo-esque, 'women rock' kind of way.

This was an entertaining film, but that's all. It just recently won Best Feature at the SXSW Film Festival, so it's obviously doing something right, but I just couldn't buy it. I couldn't buy that Anna worked in this clinic even when she was so heavily involved in the group. I couldn't buy that these girls were acting so punk rock and so serious about their cause, but were doing so many things that were so anti-feminist and anti-cause. And, the ending was bizarre and unenjoyable. I took zero satisfaction away from watching what happened and cannot believe for one second that something like that would be allowed to happen. I know this a film and a work of fiction, but some things are just too far fetched for me to take in, and this was one of them.

When it comes right down to it, "Itty Bitty Titty Committee" doesn't really know what it wants to be, and that drags the film down. Highlights were the scenes at Anna's place of work, where the characters were interested and the set-ups were well executed. Other than that, everything else was pretty mediocre. Nothing special. I was disappointed to see that Babbit's latest offering was a far cry from her previous work. The film was lucky to have her, but she was certainly not lucky to have this film, and I am not quite sure that would have attracted her to it. It's not a bad film. You just watch it realizing that something is missing and that something is not all there. "Itty Bitty Titty Committee" was one of the most over-hyped films at the festival, and has little substance.

6/10.

That's a shame, because I saw this advertised, and I was really looking forward to seeing it. Damn you and your well worded reviews.
