Sachiko Hanai is a call girl. One day she is caught up in a gunfight and is shot in the forehead. Instead of killing her, the bullet in her head gives her psychic powers. She also accidentally comes into possession of a cylinder containing George W. Bush's finger, whose fingerprint is designed to launch a nuclear missile, and international spies are soon chasing her.

Turn on your television late at night and you're apt to stumble across at least three or four channels offering up softcore porn for your viewing pleasure. These movies serve up nothing more than titillation with a flimsy storyline to string the sex scenes together, and debuting on one of these movie channels in the wee hours of the morning (or getting a review here on the M&V) is about as much as a film of this nature can hope for. Like most things in the world of cinema, it's a little different in Japan: these "pink films", as they prefer to call them, are a much bigger deal than they are over here and some of them actually focus on telling a great story along with the softcore sex. I wouldn't quite go so far as to say that about The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai, but it's definitely a far cry from what us Westerners have grown accustomed to from the genre.
Our story begins with an introduction to Sachiko (Emi Kuroda), a prostitute who specializes in role-playing for her customers. You want a woman who will pretend to be a teacher or a schoolgirl while taking care of business? She's your woman. After "getting off" from work one evening, she heads to a local cafe to wind down with a little liquid refreshment, and it is there that she winds up with a bullet in the head courtesy of a deal gone bad between two guys who happened to be in the same cafe. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time... but surprisingly, Sachiko doesn't die from this wound; in fact, it makes her much smarter, gives her psychic powers, and screws up her senses so that she only feels pain or pleasure hours after whatever caused said feelings occurred.
Unfortunately for her, however, she also wound up with the cloned finger of George W. Bush in her purse during the struggle and commotion in this cafe. This finger will allow the terrorists to detonate a nuclear bomb in any part of the world, and it also turns out to be what those men in the cafe were arguing about. Now, Sachiko must avoid being caught by the North Korean terrorist who is dead set on killing her while being a good "teacher" to a local student... and she must also keep Bush's finger - which has a life of its own - out of her nether regions.
To say that this film was bizarre would be an understatement. To say that it's nothing more than a softcore porn with some semblance of a plot would be a disservice. To say that there was no political statements to be found throughout the running time would be laughable. To call this a must-see, highly recommended film... well, that would be a bit of a stretch unless you're already a huge fan of this sort of thing.
Granted, The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai has a lot more going for it than most of the softcore offerings we get here in the states, but it's still a softcore offering at its core. Sachiko manages to have sex with just about every male that "pops up" in the storyline, and she also gets plenty of masturbation scenes in between the dry humping due to the whole "feeling pleasure after it happens" piece of the storyline. Some of these scenes are used to great comedic effect; for example, watching her sit down to eat dinner with a family only to start orgasming in the middle of a conversation was quite humorous, but most of these were nothing more than an excuse to show off some T&A. I can't very well complain about that - it is a softcore film, after all - but I couldn't help but be disappointed at times nonetheless. You've got an interesting story here, and having it interrupted every five minutes or so for the obligatory sex scene sort of ruined the flow of things. I know that my saying this is almost as bizarre as the film itself, but cutting down on the sex scenes may have actually helped to make this a much more entertaining film.
Casually recommended for fans of the "pink film" genre or for those of you enjoy the truly bizarre and don't mind sitting through a softcore film to see it. 6/10.

I rented it through Netflix, but it's also on
Amazon. I'm sure you could probably snag it from
eBay as well, but I haven't looked.
