Prior to becoming fascinated with hobbits and other fantasy bullshit, Peter Jackson was widely regarded as one of the top names in the world of splatter-comedy ("splatstick"), and with releases like Braindead and Bad Taste under his belt, it's easy to see why. Tonight's film, a little British offering by the name of Evil Aliens, sort of feels like the film that Jackson never got around to making, and in fact, it feels a lot like a more polished and much more entertaining version of the aforementioned Bad Taste with a little bit of Braindead and The Evil Dead thrown in for good measure. Folks, I try not to make comparisons like that too often, but in this case, the film at hand deserves it.

The film begins with Michelle Fox (Emily Booth), a reporter for a television show known as Weird World, getting a lead on yet another alien abduction case. We've all heard these stories before, and this one is no different: some local girl claims to have been abducted by aliens who probed her naughty spots for a while before returning her to earth with a bun in the oven. Michelle doesn't really believe the story, but with the ratings sagging, she gathers her crew - cameraman Ricky Anderson (Sam Butler), sound man Jack Campbell (Peter O'Connor), UFO expert / Sci-Fi geek Gavin Gorman (Jamie Honeybourne), and reenactment actors Candy Vixen (Jodie Shaw) and Bruce Barton (Nick Smithers) - and heads out to the scene of the abduction: a small island that houses a stone circle known as "The Devil's Teeth" (think Stonehenge on a smaller scale).

The group plans to make a few crop circles of their own, get a few interviews from the hillbillies who call this island home, and whip up a sensationalist story that will get everyone's attention when the episode airs; what they don't count on is coming face to face with real aliens. Indeed, it turns out that Cat (Jennifer Evans) wasn't lying when she said that aliens abducted and impregnated her, and they've now returned... and these particular aliens are vicious beasts that take great delight in mauling any living being that they come across. With the help of Cat's slightly psychopathic brother Llyr (Christopher Adamson) and a whole lot of farm tools, the gang must somehow find a way to fight back against this advanced race and get off the island alive.

So, based on that synopsis, I suppose that you can see where the Bad Taste comparisons come from, but aside from that one brief mention of farm tools, you're probably wondering how in the hell this is anything like Braindead. Basically, this film is something along the lines of what you would get if Jackson had decided to use aliens instead of zombies in that film, and being a fan of these types of over-the-top gore flicks, I thought that the results couldn't have been better. The second half of the film is basically grisly kill after gory kill after disgusting kill, and the phrase "buckets of blood" simply doesn't do the film justice.

How about the gore? Well, there are a few moments in which some spotty CGI effects are used, but for the most part, the blood and gore would make Peter Jackson proud. Everyone is soaked in blood once the action kicks in, and if you're in the market for some insane violence, you've picked up the right film. Shotgun blasts to the face? Chainsaw dismemberments? Decapitations that come straight out of Mortal Kombat? It's all here, and there are oodles of even better kills that I'm going to avoid mentioning so as not to spoil them.

Now, even though I enjoy a good death sequence and some imaginative kills, watching nothing but pure violence for a little shy of an hour would probably get old fast. Thankfully, the filmmakers threw in some clever writing and an honest-to-goodness storyline to keep everything fresh. There's plenty of nods to the classics (watch for a subtle yet great nod to that infamous lawnmower scene), traditional horror clichés are poked fun at, and the storyline keeps you interested without ever getting monotonous - which was actually no small feat since it basically consists of the humans running from the aliens while picking them off whenever the opportunity presents itself.

As if all that wasn't enough to warrant a recommendation (and truthfully, it is), the acting is solid all around. By far my favorite guy in the film was Jamie Honeybourne, the Sci-Fi geek who is there so that the filmmakers can poke fun at the Star Trek fans and the UFO conspiracists. However, this is not to say that he's nothing more than a comedic relief character, as he's pretty vital to the storyline and his character is surprisingly well-written. Jodie Shaw was also particularly memorable in her role, that of the T&A girl turned alien asskicker, and Christopher Adamson stole more than a couple of scenes even though his character didn't speak a word of English. The rest of the cast is just as good, and there's not a single disposable or weak character in the mix.

Evil Aliens comes highly recommended, and I regret letting this one slip under the radar for so long. It's an excellent little film that may not be high art and it may not redefine the genre, but when it comes to pure and simple entertainment, you'll certainly get your money's worth. 10/10.

This movie was fun, but I was greatly disappointed with the continuation of the tendency that B movies have gone to of not including nudity in the movies. Comon I don't think the aliens would be worried about the lady's modesty and put the chest strap across her tatas where it would not be as tight and thus allow her to struggle and move.

That being said the movie was a lot of fun and silly. A good laugh, but due to the lack of nudity or the method the aliens impregnated the women it's a one watch movie. Thus a rental, not a buy.

Definitely one of the best horror comedies I've seen in a long time. The references to Dawn of the Dead, Braindead and countless others were great.

10/10 is certainly in order.

The lack of boobs in a less-than-five-minute scene was the dealbreaker? I love boobs as much as the next guy, but that's a bit much.
