With a title like Blood and Sex Nightmare, one simply can not pick this movie up and claim that it didn't deliver what was promised. Far too many films these days are coming out with interesting titles and intriguing cover art, but once you pop the discs into your player, you discover that you've been conned out of your hard-earned cash or your Netflix slot. This is not the case here: you get lots of blood, lots of sex, and it's all wrapped up in a nightmarish little story. It's not a perfect film and it's not even a particularly great one, but I have to give the filmmakers credit for a title that doesn't beat around the bush.

Although the details have been changed and the faces are fresh, the basic storyline is one that we've all seen before. We begin with Amy (Julia Morizawa) returning home from Japan after her father dies, and not ten minutes after walking through the door, her boyfriend Nick (Andy McGuinness) breaks out a brochure for the Pleasure Mountain Adult Retreat. Yes, that's a fancy name for a campground that caters to swingers, and indeed, our leading man is none too subtle about wanting to finally get into his prudish girlfriend's pants, but the guy has to be applauded for being so smooth about presenting his brilliant idea - especially after Amy agrees to it.

Upon their arrival, they discover a few things that the brochure conveniently forgot to mention. For starters, this retreat caters to some rather bizarre fetishes, with one cabin being dedicated to those who want to mix together incest, gay sex, and fifties-era sitcoms (complete with laugh tracks). They also find out that the elderly groundskeeper (Dan Petit) is a serial rapist waiting to happen (or is about to happen, or has happened) who wants nothing more than "a piece of" poor Amy and who proudly brags about his "ten inch dick." The most glaring omission of all, however, is that little thing about this retreat being haunted by the ghost of Felix Gallo (Tom Thatcher), a charming lad who was molested by his mother from an early age up until he hung himself at the ripe old age of twenty-four. With his molestation issues being a given, this particular spirit is none too happy about all of the sex going on in his neck of the woods, and this is where the "Blood" part of the title comes into play. Tina Krause makes a brief cameo appearance.

So, as I mentioned above, you get what you pay for with this release: no more, no less. You want blood? There's plenty of that with numerous kills and a couple of cringe-worthy moments. Sex? Got that covered too, and while this is far from a skin-flick, the men in the audience will be pleased with the amount of nudity provided. How about blood and sex? Well, not to tread into spoiler territory, but we do get to see a bloody vagina, and I don't think it was "that time of the month" for the lady in question. Not only does the film deliver what it promises, but the effects guys managed to make the budget (a paltry three grand) go a lot further than it should have.

Much like those classic slashers from the eighties, the storyline for Blood and Sex Nightmare follows a tried and true formula: take a serial killer, splash in a bit of back-story explaining why he enjoys brutally murdering people as much as he does, throw in a couple of heroes, and serve the entire thing up with as many victims as possible. It's certainly not Shakespeare, but then again, neither was Friday the 13th. Speaking of Friday, you can't help but get the impression that the groundskeeper character was a nod to a certain crazy old man (although this one doesn't ride a bike, sadly), and for my money, this character added a lot to the film. Dan Petit was great in his role and added some classic scenes to the film, and even though you don't normally go into a film of this nature looking for stellar performances, I've got to give him credit for being one of the highlights of the movie.

When all is said and done, the resulting film feels a lot like one of those slashers that I mentioned above in that the filmmakers were obviously aiming to cram as many dismemberments, kills, and tits into the running time as humanly possible. While this sort of film definitely isn't for everyone, those who do enjoy slashers from decades gone by will certainly find a lot to enjoy with this release. 7.5/10.
