There are two groups of people on this planet: those who saw the trailer for Black Devil Doll and realized that it was one of the must-see movies of the century, and those who didn't see that trailer. There was absolutely nobody out there who saw that trailer and thought that it was a movie that could be skipped, but unfortunately for those of us not living in one of the few cities that it played in, it feels like it's been about a decade between the day that trailer popped up and the DVD release. Thankfully, that day has finally arrived, and I've just finished watching what I thought was sure to be a movie-of-the-year candidate. I can now say that it's not, but it's definitely not a bad flick either.

It all begins when black militant serial killer Mubia Abul-Jama (Jonathan Lewis) takes that fateful walk from holding cell to electric chair. You see, our hero racked up quite a body count before being brought to justice by an all-white jury, and his victims consisted entirely of nubile young white women who he raped before brutally murdering. So, this monster is strapped into that chair and an officer of the law flips the switch, sending this member of the Black Power Party to hell. The end? Well, it'd be a short movie if it was.

Over on the other side of town, big-breasted white girl Heather (Heather Murphy) is home alone on a Saturday night after breaking up with her boyfriend White-T (Martin Boone). Her friends are busy and there's nothing on television, but hey - there's a Ouija board right there on the table, so she decides to make the best of the night with it. She eventually contacts the spirit of our buddy Mubia, and it doesn't take long before he enters the physical world... well, sort of. His spirit manifests inside a ventriloquist's dummy, and in doing so, the dummy turns into a miniature version of Mr. Black Power, complete with afro and camouflage pants. From there... well, he's a jive-talking "nigger puppet" with a "dick that no woman can resist" who enjoys raping white women before murdering them. Heather is a big-breasted white woman who has about four friends with comparable bust sizes, so you do the math. Natasha Talonz, Christine Svendsen, Erika Branich, and Precious Cox play the aforementioned friends, and we have ourselves a movie.

"Bitch, I say nigger over a hundred times a day. It's the only thing that keeps my teeth white." Imagine that quote coming out of the mouth of a puppet with an afro who is wearing a Black Panther outfit while eating a bucket of Oakland Fried Chicken (complete with blackface logo): did you laugh or did you shriek in disgust at the mental image? That reaction will say a lot about how much you will enjoy the film as a whole, as it is rife with this type of racial humor. Directed by the "self-hating negro" Jonathan Lewis, Black Devil Doll is not afraid to push the boundaries of good taste; in fact, it seems as though the man got a kick out of seeing just how far past said boundaries he could travel. This is not a film for the easily offended, but everyone else will more than likely get a couple of hearty laughs out of it... even if they don't want to admit it.

With that out of the way, let me just come right out and say it: fans of exploitation sleaze will gobble this shit up and ask for more (and judging by the open ending, they may just get it). I've already covered the dark humor that is prevalent in each and every last one of the scenes, but there's also the skin-flick aspect that is rather hard to ignore. Black Devil Doll is not a porno, but it does come damned close at times: I don't think two minutes pass without at least one topless woman on screen. We see women comparing breast sizes, feeling each other up, playing a provocative game of Twister, having sex with the leading puppet (sometimes consensual, oftentimes not), and hell, the leading lady feels the need to rip open her shirt before unleashing a flurry of bullets when the shit finally hits the fan.

So we've got humor and we've got tits - what else do we need? Well, there's that little "...and then he murders them" thing that comes after the raping, and no, the filmmakers don't skimp out on the red stuff. One woman is stabbed to death, another has her throat slit, and still another is electrocuted in her bathtub before getting that black puppet's "woody" shoved down her throat. That is but a sampling of the carnage that takes place throughout the film, so if you came to see gore, Lewis has you covered in that regard as well.

Honestly, there's nothing negative that I can say about the film. It delivers everything that it promised, it's shot rather well with no technical issues to speak of, and if you want to see plenty of "blood, boobs, and black humor", then you picked up the right movie. It's a highly-quotable film that will stick out in your mind, but the overall presentation seems to be missing that certain something that moves it beyond "a great film" and into "a perfect film." I can't quite put my finger on what it was that the film was missing, but I do know that I didn't walk away from this thinking that it was a perfect release. Damned close, but not quite. 8/10.
