Marvel has really been doing a bang up job of putting out good animated features in the past few years. No longer are they putting out movies that feel like extra-long Saturday morning fodder (for the most part). Now they're animating stories good enough for a major, live-action production. It doesn't hurt that they're lifting plots right from recent comics, but Marvel might as well steal from the best (themselves), right?

Planet Hulk tells the story of a Hulk who grew too wild and destructive for his fellow super-beings. Knowing they could not permanently contain his incredibleness, the heroes of Earth strapped the Hulk into a spaceship and sent him to an uninhabited planet far away. The Hulk only made it part way, however, before his thrashing threw the ship off course and landed him on Sakaar.

Weakened from the journey, the Hulk is captured and sold into slavery to fight as a gladiator. In the arena, his popularity soon grows immense. The downtrodden see the Hulk as the savior from prophecy. His fellow gladiators see him as the key to winning their freedom. The Red King sees the Hulk as a threat. The Hulk sees everyone else as a nuisance.

Will the Hulk rise above his bestial nature and show himself to be a hero? Or will the Hulk smash them all? Buy the DVD yourself!

I really enjoyed this movie. The story, the animation--everything really--was great. The production values were excellent, and the worst criticism I can bring against the movie is that the voice acting was adequate. None of the characters were bad or annoying, but none really stood out. Thinking that the movie was PG-13, I was a little shocked by the amount of blood, but it turns out Marvel left themselves with a bit of freedom by leaving the movie unrated.

In a nutshell, "Planet Hulk" is the movie "Gladiator" with the Hulk playing the role of Maximus. This movie certainly isn't as cerebral, but it has some excellent fight scenes and smooth, quick-moving plot. Their is also one scene in the movie that has to be about the most disturbing moment I've seen in a movie yet, animated or not.

I'd highly recommend picking this up. I grabbed a copy for $20 and don't feel cheated at all.

8/10.

Enjoyed this one. For the most part, I haven't been digging the last bunch of Marvel DTV titles, but this one was awesome. Probably just because I've always been a Hulk fan. Either way, enjoyable movie.
