Hangtown Foreclosure is a documentary produced and directed by Mike Williams, which shows the trials and tribulations of his process with getting a loan modification. For those who aren't aware of what a loan modification/mortgage modification is, click here to get a little background information on what they are, and how they can affect you.

As for the film, in most of the situations shown, I will truly agree that Mike seems to be getting shit on by the banks who are supposed to be helping him, and by the district attorney who may or may not have been dismissive towards him. There's a part shown where a company is looking into one of Mike's claims, and the company states "We have it reported here that your case was marked resolved, and we closed it." This makes him livid, and I can speak from experience (having a job working with/in IT), that this shit happens a LOT for absolutely no reason, and it's frustrating for the client in the situation. It also sucks when you're trying to get a resolution to an issue you're having, and you keep getting passed from faceless person to faceless person. A lot of the things portrayed in the documentary would push most people to a breaking point, and it's impressive that through everything, Mike kept at his goal, and didn't let anything stop him from finding out the information he needed.

But along with keeping at his goal, I do find it completely offensive the way Mike talks to people in a lot of the situations. Yes, I understand he seems to be getting passed back and forth between companies. Yes, I understand that when dealing with your home, it's obviously scary when it seems like no one is helping you. Shelter is one of the big three needs of human life, and I would probably act the same exact way if I was in this situation, but that doesn't make it correct the way he treats some of the people who he's dealing with. It bothers me the way he almost strong-arms people to say what he wants to hear, or just to prove his point. There's a lot of points like this, whether he's actively trying to find people to yell at for things their co-workers do, or he's on the phone doing the same. It seems like through certain parts he felt like if he screamed at the camera, it would make the documentary more powerful or more eye-opening to his plight.

This entire film, even though it's labeled as a warning to consumers about mortgage modifications, is extremely biased towards ONE person's situation, and towards ONE person's results with the process. A friend of mine explained to me what's involved with the modification process, and while it is basically asking the banks to put faith in you to grant you a break, it's something that can help a LOT of people. She's still in her home, and a modification helped keep her and her husband in their home in their time of need. That's the saddest part of all of this...Someone might see this film, and think that the modification process can't help you, even though it might be able to help save your house.
