Connections: Deep Throat

In 1972, a seemingly typical shoestring budget pornographic film was made in a Florida hotel, "Deep Throat," starring Linda Lovelace. This film would surpass the wildest expectation of everyone involved to become one of the most successful independent films of all time. It caught the public imagination which met the spirit of the times, even as the self appointed guardians of public morality struggled to suppress it, and created, for a brief moment, a possible future where sexuality in film had a bold artistic potential. This film covers the story of the making of this controversial film, its stunning success, its hysterical opposition along with its dark side of mob influence and allegations of the on set mistreatment of the film's star. In short, the combined events would redefine the popular appeal of pornography, even as more cynical developments would lead it down other paths. --IMDb

I'm just going to go ahead and assume that all of you reading this have already seen, or at least heard of "Deep Throat" since you are all a bunch of perverts. It was a cheap porno movie made for $25,000 in the early 1970's and it eventually grossed $600 million worldwide making it one of the most profitable movies of all time. A few years ago a couple of filmmakers decided to make a documentary about the infamous film. They wanted to find out why it was such a phenomenon, why it caused so much controversy and what went on behind the scenes. They did just that and gave us "Inside Deep Throat".

"Inside Deep Throat" is a documentary that gives us both the pros and cons of the movie "Deep Throat". We get to look at the filmmakers involved, the actors and actresses and of course the impact that it had on our society. In the early 70's Gerard Damiano and his wife owned a beauty parlor in New York City where every day he would hear women complain about their husbands and their terrible sex lives. He began to take note and started to sense that a new age was upon us, and that people weren't as prude as they used to be. He eventually got the idea to start making cheap porno movies as he figured more people would be interested in them and that there was a market for it. As he was filming a last scene for one of his movies, he was introduced to Linda Lovelace. After he found out what she could do he just had to make a movie based entirely on her unique talent. Thus, "Deep Throat" was made. The movie first opened in New York and people would be lining up around the corner to catch the movie. The documentary shows us that mostly everyone wanted to see this movie. They even have footage of an innocent old lady coming out of the theater quite happy saying that she enjoyed the movie and is not embarrassed by it. Unfortunately the government wasn't too happy with this movie being screened, so they deemed it too obscene and forced the theaters to pull the movie. If that wasn't enough, they even had officials travel to the theaters and take the films by force. Of course by this time more people wanted to see the movie because there was so much publicity about it. Because of all the negativity from the government the movie was able to bring in millions and it eventually started to spread all over the U.S.

It wasn't all happy though. We eventually find out that the mob was also involved with the movie as well, and this lead to the FBI getting involved. The documentary also shows us the lives of the actors and actresses after the movie was released. Actor Harry Reams was a target by the authorities and was eventually sentenced 5 years in jail. The star, Linda Lovelace started to become against the movie by the 80's claiming that she basically had no control with her life at the time what so ever. This all eventually leads to the downward spiral on "cinematic pornography" as by the 90's the movies started coming out in the thousands and were just terrible.

The documentary mentions a lot of interesting facts, and for the most part I liked it. It was interesting seeing how the lives of everyone involved ended up. It was great listening to how the movie was in pre-production from everyone's opinion whether good or bad. But in the end, I wasn't quite satisfied with everything that was discussed. Sure we have a lot of information as to what happened after the movie was released and before filming. But I wanted to know more about what was going on behind the scene during the production of the film. Linda said in court that watching "Deep Throat" is the same as watching her getting raped. I want to know the specifics as to why she says this, not just "she was forced to". It is mentioned that her boyfriend at the time could easily make her do what he wanted, saying that he would "hypnotize" her. They do give us some information, but I guess I just wanted more dirt. Around 600 hours of interview footage was recorded during the making of this documentary and there is no doubt in my mind that there is some juicy material in there somewhere but we can't see it because of legal issues.

In the end it was an enjoyable documentary that was just enough to keep me interested. The only problem is that most of what is told is common sense, or already known by both the people who have seen the movie or haven't. Give it a shot though; it is still pretty interesting, but not perfect. 7.5/10.
