Connections: Ginger Snaps

Set in 19th Century Canada, Brigette and her sister Ginger take refuge in a Traders' Fort which later becomes under siege by some savage werewolves. This is supposedly the final movie in the series, with no more sequels to follow this. I'm hoping that's not the case, as this one is quite the letdown, and really shouldn't be the one to finish off the series. This one has no connection whatsoever to the the first or second films in the series, with the exception of the lead characters Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and Brigitte (Emily Perkins). We start out the film in the year 1812, out in the wilderness of Canada. The sisters are traveling cross-country via horse after their parents drowned in a boating accident. They come upon an old Indian woman, who tells them a seemingly-meaningless bit of information: "Kill the boy, or one sister will kill the other." As they're trying to get more information out of the lady, their horse gets spooked and runs off. The sisters chase after it, and Brigitte gets her leg caught in an animal trap. While Ginger is trying to return to the Indian woman's campsite to get help, an unnamed Indian hunter (Nathaniel Arcand) shows up and frees Brigitte from the trap. He leads them on to Bailey Fort, where a bunch of men have holed themselves up after part of their group was lost while going out to get supplies. There's some sort of strange beings lurking outside the fort that have been killing off the men in large numbers... gee, what could they be?!

That's our basic plot without giving away any spoilers. Instead of picking up right where the second part left off (which I'd have definitely been interested in), or picking up sometime after that, they chose to place this one back in the 1800's as a prequel to the series. There's no connection whatsoever to the other films, and no references to the other films are made at all. This makes sense from a storyline standpoint, but I found it to be very disappointing that they didn't continue the great storyline that had been started with the first two entries in the series, especially when the second one ended with a cliff-hanger of sorts.

Now, I'm not going to rate this movie based on my sadness that the series was fucked up and didn't get a proper finale, I'm going to rate it strictly on the content of this movie by itself. With that in mind, this film was still a huge disappointment in my eyes. Sure, there's some great set-pieces setup, and Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins do great in their roles as the sisters, as usual. There's also a great closing sequence here, with one of the better werewolf battles that I've seen in my time. It's just that everything else sort of falls to pieces, leaving us with some great actresses, one great scene, and nothing much else to speak of. The idea of having all of these people trapped inside a fort with tons of werewolves outside trying to break in could have worked out, but the director of the film didn't go that route. Instead, he chose to hand us one short attempt at the werewolves breaking in at the halfway point of the movie, and the rest of the film deals with the men turning on each other, the sisters staying together, and old Indian prophecies. As I've mentioned before, I'm not normally one to bitch about plenty of storyline being given, but the storyline itself needs to be of good quality if there's going to be this much of it, and there does need to be some sort of action or something to keep things interesting in films such as this.

Overall, a huge disappointment to myself, as I was a fan of the first two movies in the series. It might be worth the rental if you enjoyed the other films as well, but you'd be better off to just fast-forward to the last twenty minutes or so, watch that, and then call it a night. Very sad, indeed. 4/10.

What a disappointment! I agree with Chad, I'd much rather have picked up where Unleashed left off instead of going back in time. In fact, I agree with this entire review, the movie was boring, and the only thing worthwhile was the final climatic wolf attack. 3/10
