Connections: Cube

Eight strangers find themselves waking up in a strange cube-shaped room with no recollection of how they came to be there. Soon discovering that they're in a strange fourth dimension where our laws of physics don't apply, they have to unravel the secrets of the "hypercube" in order to survive. --IMDb

Same concept of the first film, a number of people with different attributes are stuck in a giant cube and the only way to survive is to escape. The all new prisoners are Kate (psychotherapist), Sasha (blind school student), Jerry (game designer), Thomas (military colonel), Simon (private investigator), Max (engineer), Paley (theoretical mathematician), Julia (attorney). A couple more people than the first one, but each of them all were connected through one another and all had reasons to be there. Some of the acting was a bit off at times, but it was adequate enough to sit through.

Had it not been for a large amount of comedy that was written in for the characters, the script would have been much better. But characters like Mrs. Paley seemed to be written in there for just a joke. She did have something to do with the current dilemma they were all in. But she was senile and the things that were written for her just seemed like they were there to get a laugh out of the audience. She'd be looking for her dog one minute, then talking to an imaginary person in the corner of the room, or asking where she could find the showers. There's other comedic moments through out the film, but they're not worth mentioning. Most of the other characters were alright, nothing out of the ordinary.

Computer generated imagery was basically all the film relied on. Everything was so bland, they tried to make up for it in the CGI. Given the CGI was a visual treat, it's not at all hard to create something like that. Thankfully the ideas put into most of the CGI effects were good. There was one piece that involved a square that reacted on movements. The more movements there were, the square turned into a cube and continued to grow. It eventually killed one of the prisoners, then got so large that it filled the room, trapping two of them inside as the others make their way else where. Another was when long lines of cubes started to come from the walls and would pixelate someone into small pieces.

Now for the comparison to the first one. New rooms in this one which were a lot less detailed. The only reason that was done was to make it easy on the computer generators to digitally add things into the room. Instead of only some of the rooms being safe and the others being filled with traps, all the rooms were safe and once in a great while, the wall would begin to close in or a cube would try to hack people up. It wasn't very exciting to see each prisoner run through room after room, eventually yelling at someone or getting annoyed for no apparent reason. Needless to say, there was a lot more surprises in the first one.

Paley was thrown into the film to take the spot of Kazan's role in the first one, the annoying/dumb character. But Kazan ended up being a genius, and showed it. Paley was a retired theoretical mathematician and did nothing but talk nonsense for the entire film. There was also many unnecessary scenes that the first one didn't even touch. The most useless one was the sex scene between Max and Julia. I don't look down upon such scenes when they fit in with the film, but it was really not needed in this one. These two people are trapped in a cube. Being incredibly hungry and tired, they decide now would be a good time to have sex. By far the most useless scene in the film.

Compared to the first one, it was a semi-worthy sequel. It was good it wasn't exactly like the first one. New characters, new design to the rooms, no traps in the majority of the rooms. But it was all a downgrade. More characters were added and most of them weren't written that well. The room designs were so boring. The rooms were all white, grey paneling, and black doors that had to be touched to be opened, instead of unsealing a lock. Then the traps, there was so few of them it just seemed like they would have almost had the same suspense factor if they weren't even there. Had Natali directed and written the film, it would have been a guaranteed better sequel. If you're a big fan of the first film, as I am, it's almost mandatory to see this one. But if it was a film that was just another film, don't bother.

Final Conclusion: 6/10

This was a great movie. This was the one that got me hooked so I went to watch the first one and it blew me outta the water.

Not as good as the first one, but still, a surprisingly good movie. 7/10 seems about right.

I actually like this one much better than the first one. The first one just didn't catch my interest.
