After three movies, we find ourselves at the final chapter of the series (for now). In this entry, the main storyline spoofs both Signs and The Ring with a little bit of 8 Mile and The Matrix thrown in to spice things up. If you've seen the first two movies listed above and either of the movies in this series, then you pretty much know how this is going to work out. Former preacher Tom (Charlie Sheen) and his white rapper son George (Simon Rex) live out on a farm, a farm that is being plagued by a series of crop-circles and mysterious happenings. George ends up meeting Cindy (Anna Faris), a news-reporter who is in the process of hunting down the origins of a mysterious video tape that both she and her son Cody (Drew Mikusha) have watched. The two storylines end up connecting in more ways than one, and the President of the United States of America (Leslie Nielsen) turns to these two in order to help save the world.
The general consensus of this series seems to be that the first one is great, the second one sucks, and the third one is almost as good as the original. I disagree on two out of three of those counts; the first one is indeed great, the second one does not suck, and this final installment is nowhere near as good as the first two. While there are some truly hilarious scenes in this movie, such as the whole funeral wake part after Brenda's (Regina Hall) death and the opening segment with Pamela Anderson and Jenny McCarthy reenacting the opening of The Ring, the movie as a whole just isn't as funny as the first two. Yes, there are a couple of hilarious gags in this movie... but for the most part, the jokes simply manage to muster a small chuckle, if that.
This is, in my opinion, a result of the change in the formula from the first two entries. Whereas the first two movies pulled the laughs from their constant usage of fart-jokes and sexual humor, this one attempts to cut nearly all of that type of material out and go with the slapstick style of comedy. There's nothing wrong with a good slapstick movie, and I've enjoyed numerous movies that stick to that side of comedy. Here, however, the style just doesn't work out most of the time. The storyline doesn't fit the style, and most of the actors don't pull off the slapstick aspect of the jokes well enough to receive anything more than a ho-hum from the home audience. Had the gross-out comedy aspect returned instead of the change to the slapstick format, this movie would have been leagues better... even with the same storyline and actors intact.
There's a number of cameo appearances sprinkled throughout the run time, and almost every one of them does bring a little humor to the mix. George Carlin, Queen Latifah, Simon Cowell, and Eddie Griffin are the best in that respect, although none of them really receive enough time to shine. The Wu-Tang Clan shows up, along with fellow rappers Fat Joe, Ja Rule, Master P, and soulstress Macy Gray. With the exception of Fat Joe, none of these fellows are used as anything other than scenery. They show up, smile for the camera, have a quick scene, and are gone. While I understand that the whole nature of a cameo is for the people to only be around for a short time, it just seemed a waste to have so many high-profile stars and to barely use them.
Overall, it's an alright movie, although nowhere near as good as the first two. Fans of the series will get a couple of laughs out of this, but if those fans are anything like me, they'll mainly be watching the clock to see how much time is left on the DVD. 5/10.
