Another spoof of the Scream/I Know What You Did Last Summer horror genre involving a group of popular high school students stalked by a bumbling masked killer while a dogged reporter named Hagitha Utslay covers the story and the plight of the prime suspect and transfer student Dawson. --IMDb

Now here's an interesting concept: a parody of a film (Scary Movie), which was a parody of another film (Scream), which wasn't exactly a parody, but it did have its "wink wink, nudge nudge" moments. Note that I said it was an interesting concept; I didn't say that it was a good one.

Much like Scary Movie, you'll already know the storyline behind this if you've seen Scream and / or I Know What You Did Last Summer. A group of high-school "teens" - the school slut Barbara Primesuspect (Julie Benz), the new kid Dawson Deary (Harley Cross), a sports-minded and potential lesbian named Martina Martinez (Majandra Delfino), the jock Slab O'Beef (Simon Rex), and the ever-horny Boner (Danny Strong) - did something horrible last year (they hit a deer while drinking and driving), and now someone in a white "Scream" mask is leaving them notes telling them that he knows what they did last summer. Meanwhile, a news reporter for empTV (Tiffani-Amber Thiessen) and a rent-a-cop (Tom Arnold) are tracking the killer, and... well, do I really need to explain where it goes from there? People die, jokes are made, and we get a few cameo appearances along the way with Coolio being the main one (why he got top billing is beyond me).

First off, the inevitable question: how does it compare to the Scary Movie series? Well, Scary Movie is very hit-or-miss depending on your personal preferences, but in my humble opinion, it's a much better film with more laughs to be found. However, those of you who were put off by the large amount of sexual and gross-out humor may enjoy this one more: there's some naughty stuff to be found, sure, but it's a lot cleaner than the Wayans Brothers' creation for the most part.

The main thing that hurt this movie, in my humble opinion, was the sheer amount of jokes contained within. "But it's a parody - that's the whole point!" you may be thinking, and of course, you're correct; however, it seemed like not five seconds would go by where there wasn't some sort of sight-gag, a background joke, or a silly sign on the wall that tried to be funny, but came off as merely being stupid. Yes, it seems as though the writers went for quantity over quality here, and while there were a handful of good scenes (the "oh, it was only a cat" gimmick is skewered brilliantly), the vast majority of the presented jokes were lucky to pull so much as a grin out of me. I'm sure those Wayans kids had hundreds of ideas during the production of Scary Movie, but they edited it down so that only the truly funny stuff remained; these guys seemed to have crammed every single one of their ideas in, regardless of how stupid it ended up coming across on screen.

On the positive side, I have to admit that the relatively-unknown cast did fairly well in their roles with a lone exception. I won't point him out (I'm feeling nice today), but this one guy was really the only blemish on the film in regards to the cast delivering their lines with the proper comedic timing and follow-ups. It's unfortunate that the writing wasn't on par with the acting, as we could have wound up with yet another excellent parody of the recent horror trends; instead, what we have here is a direct-to-video release that languishes in the $4.99 bargain bin at Wal*Mart.

For the price I paid for it, it's hard to really say anything bad about it. It's a decent enough movie, and if you happen to stumble across it in your local bargain bin like I did, well... you could do a whole lot worse. However, rating this based purely on the content (as I'm sort of apt to do on this site), it's really not worth the effort it would require to carry it to the register and dig around in your wallet for a five. 3/10.

I for one, loved this movie.
It was by no means a good movie, but there were so many moments in it that I laughed my ass off.
Basically, Dave Herman and Tom Arnold made this movie for me.

Could have been worse. For a direct-to-video release, could have been A LOT worse. I remember seeing another straight-to-video parody in the early 90's called "The Silence of the Hams" and it made me laugh but wasn't great. Same here. Loved Tom Arnold. 6/10.

I dug it myself. Definitely worth watching.

Silence of the Hams was funny. I like when Hannibal is showing the police how he eats his victims and one had a woman's ass on a pizza.
