An 18 year old Catherine Miles graduates from her boarding school and takes a trip with her parents to the Amazon. While on a boat ride, her parents are brutally murdered by a local cannibal tribe and she is taken prisoner. In order to survive, she adopts the customs of the tribe with the help of a warrior who has fallen in love with her, all the while planning vengeance for her parents' death. He later helps her to escape, and now free, she goes to find who exactly was behind the death of her parents.

Although often billed as the sequel to Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust, White Slave is actually pretty far from being the typical cannibal film. In fact, there aren't any actual cannibals involved and the storyline found here owes more to Man From Deep River than anything else. You've just got to love that European marketing, eh?
Catherine Miles (Elvire Audray) stars as an eighteen-year-old lady who returns to her parents' home in the Amazon in order to spend a little quality time with them on their plantation. While out on a boat ride, the trio is attacked by a group of savages who use blowguns to poison the lot of them, and they then proceed to behead her parents while she watches on in horror. However, since Catherine did not receive a fatal amount of poison, she was merely paralyzed instead of being killed, and this prompts Umukai (Will Gonzales) to tie her up and take her back to his village as a prisoner. There, she is treated like a slave and sold to the highest bidder (for no less than a couple of animals), but she eventually gains the trust of the natives and becomes just another woman amongst them. She learns their ways and starts to feel more comfortable around them, and it is then that Umukai starts to show his feelings for her... but can she forgive the man who murdered her parents?
Alright, so as I've mentioned a couple of times in various reviews for this site, I'm not a huge fan of the whole cannibal subgenre of films, and while this technically isn't a cannibal film, it does feature almost all of the trademarks of one: a civilized person in a savage world, tribal rituals, barbaric punishments, animal killings, etc. However, I did enjoy White Slave more than I expected to, and in fact, I actually enjoyed it more than Man From Deep River, the film that it "borrowed" heavily from in more ways than one.
The main emphasis of the film is Catherine's interaction with the savages and shows how she grows accustomed to their way of life, and while the same could be said about the plot of Man From Deep River, I simply enjoyed White Slave's take on the story more. Perhaps this could be attributed to the fact that the movie is supposedly based on a true story and is told through a series of flashbacks by Catherine as she discusses her story with members of a court, or maybe it was simply due to Elvire Audray being better suited for this role than her male counterpart.
The abundance of violence that most cannibal films are known for is mostly absent from this release, but there are a couple of good scenes nonetheless. The murder of Catherine's parents is particularly brutal and would make the Taliban proud, and one of the tribesmen is executed in an especially nasty way (hint: it involves honey and ants). A few animals are also killed, but these scenes are limited to animal-on-animal violence with no direct human interaction. There's a handful of other murders as well, but those were my personal highlights.
Check it out if you're a fan of the many other gritty cannibal movies of the seventies and eighties, especially if you enjoyed Man From Deep River. It may not have achieved the cult status of those other films, but it's just as good as most of them. 7/10.

The White Slave Collection (comes out on May 8th)
is pretty nice - comes with this, Naked Amazon,
and Sacrifice of the White Goddess. $13 for three
movies, can't beat that.
