Remember the days when the Coreys ruled the world? All right, so they never ruled the world, but Corey Haim and Corey Feldman were hot commodities in the 1980's, and they both starred in some of the most acclaimed and memorable films of the 1980's. Many of these films are on the verge of being forgotten, most notably the 1986 drama "Lucas". This was the film that showed Corey Haim could act as well as mug for the camera; it was the film that finally started earning him critical acclaim; and, it is the one film of his that everyone seems to know but no one can seem to remember. I remember watching "Lucas" all the time when I was younger, and always found it rather entertaining -- in fact, it's probably one of my favorite films from the 1980's.

Corey Haim stars as Lucas, a stereotypical nerd who decides he doesn't want to be picked on anymore. He tries out for the football team, even befriending the quarterback (Charlie Sheen). He meets the new girl (Kerri Green) and befriends her, eventually falling for her as well. Winona Ryder co-stars as Lucas' friend, and Jeremy Piven, in one of his first roles, as a high school asshead. The film is basically about fitting in and making friends, and about those high school days that some people want to forget. It's about a character who wants to make his own way in the world, and is prepared to go through whatever in order to make that happen.

The ending of the film is a little too sentimental for some people, but I thought it was in keeping with the rest of the film. This picture is kind of like "Rudy" in high school, with the same determination and grit. Corey Haim plays the role remarkably well for someone his age, and Charlie Sheen and Kerri Green also offer fine support. They don't make films like this anymore, which is a shame, because they're the films you remember. I remember "My Girl". I remember "The Breakfast Club". I remember "Lucas". I don't remember "She's All That". I don't remember "10 Things I Hate About You". That's the difference. This one was a winner. 8/10.
