Tom, Maggie, and their son Jake all live pretty normal lives, with the exception that little Jake sees and hears ghosts in the house. His parents, being the busy-bodies that they are, don't seem to notice. In the first night of the movie, Tom, Maggie, and Maggie's sister all go to a party. The conversation gets turned around to hypnosis, and Tom says hypnosis is all a bunch of bullshit. Maggie's sister claims it's not, and that he's an asshole. Tom says to prove it, hypnotize him. She does so, and plants a message in his brain for him to be more open, intending for him to be more open-minded... instead, he's now more open to ghostly stuff. When he returns home, he finds that there is some freaky shit going on, and that Jake knows all about it...

Very nice supernatural thriller right here. Sadly, this came out right around the time as "The Sixth Sense", and since that was so insanely popular, this one was kinda ignored in the process. It's a shame, because while they share some similarities, this one is the better of the two by far. The storyline is much tighter and believable, and the acting jobs are done nicer as well. I'm not normally a huge fan of Kevin Bacon, but he did damned fine in this role, which was a shocker. I'm also not normally a fan of kiddies in horror / suspense movies, but the kid really wasn't a huge part of this movie. He had his scenes where a little bit of the story would unfold, but nothing really major happened during them for him to screw up.

The effects were very nicely done when they were used, although there wasn't a whole lot of stuff that required special effects. In one scene, we see what happened to this ghost when she was still alive, and the things that happen to her... ugh, even made me wince, and that's a bit of an accomplishment there. Other than this scene, which lasted about ten minutes or so, there were really no effects used... which is quite the good thing, since so many movies try to rely on such stuff to make up for a shit storyline.

Overall, if you liked the concept of "The Sixth Sense" but thought that the movie itself was a bit lame, check this one out. 8/10.

I saw this a few years ago when it was newer... and found it to be worth seeing.

worth watching once, not the type you can watch again and enjoy, IMO

This movie was completely changed from the book. And I don't even mean a little changed. The movie has some kids kill the girl. In the book, it's some woman across the street's husband, if I recall correctly. They should have left it as it was, because it was much much better the way the book told it. 6/10

I enjoyed the movie and I thought the story was good enough to entertain me. Also the girl that plays the ghost is hot. 8/10
