Robert Schmadkte and his wife Betty have a fetish for blood and dead bodies. Luckily for them, Robert is in the right line of work for such a passion - he is part of a "clean up" crew, picking up dead bodies and taking them to the morgue. The bodies are often in states of decomposing or have limbs or sections missing. Robert often brings a body home for him and his wife to enjoy. Then one day his wife decides she prefers the latest dead body to her husband...

Tonight's film happens to be one of those cult classics that everyone worth their weight in bootlegs has at least heard of, and it also happens to be one of those films that continually pops up when discussing the most disturbing films of all time. I'm referring, of course, to the little German slice of depravity known as Nekromantik, one of the few movies that has dared to show necrophilia in all its gory goodness. Sure, other films have hinted at it, but as far as showing the audience all of the grisly details? Very few films will top this one in that regard, that's for damned sure.
If you live in Germany, there's a fairly good chance that one day, you'll be dealing with Joe's Streetcleaning Agency. You see, Joe and his boys take care of cleaning up crime scenes and removing the dead bodies after the police have done their thing, and this leads us to their newest employee Robert (Daktari Lorenz), a man who is obsessed with death and human remains. It all begins innocently enough, as Robert is content to simply swipe an eyeball here and steal a heart there, but when he manages to bring home an entire rotting corpse, he and his girlfriend couldn't be happier. Yes, the lady of the house - Betty (Beatrice Manowski) - is also a fan of the macabre, and when I say that these two are fans of the dead, I mean that they enjoy having threesomes with the rapidly-decomposing remains of this poor sap that Robert found in the swamp. However, not all is peaches and cream in this particular household, especially when Betty decides to run off with the corpse and leave Robert alone in his pigsty of an apartment, and from there, our leading man sinks first into depression, then desperation, and finally, insanity.
Yes, the rumors are true: Nekromantik does feature some truly disturbing and disgusting scenes, and those of you who think you've seen it all will have to add this one to your collection if you haven't already. The whole necrophilia aspect is exploited to the max, and nothing is left to the imagination here as the couple straps a pipe to the corpse's crotch and ride it until the early hours of the morning. There's also an animal killed for our "amusement", as we get to watch a farmer kill, skin, and gut a rabbit... and then we get to watch the whole scene played in reversed towards the end of the film. That's really not my cup of tea, but it's there for the shock value if nothing else.
As far as the storyline goes, well - this is a movie about corpse-fucking degenerates, do you really expect an epic here? Of course not, and it should go without saying that we don't get one. However, this does lead us to the film's major flaw, that being that once it has shot its load (pardon the pun), it quickly takes a nosedive and causes the viewer to want to mash that fast-forward button. You see, the vast majority of "the good stuff" takes place in the first forty minutes, and naturally, we witness the disgusting "climax" of the film during the last five minutes, but everything in between is really nothing more than filler. We watch as Robert goes to the theater and watches a movie, we witness him pick up a prostitute and bang her in the local cemetery, and we've also got a dream sequence that was probably intended to be artsy but comes across as downright retarded. When all is said and done, there's about thirty minutes of footage here that should have wound up on the cutting room floor, so needless to say, I can't give this film an extremely high rating regardless of its cult status.
Basically, what we have here is a film that is best known for its two or three great scenes, even though the rest of the film absolutely stinks. Fans of the twisted and bizarre will enjoy the presentation just for those handful of scenes as they're certainly worth watching, but this is one of those movies where you'd be well-advised to simply hunt down the better scenes on YouTube. 6/10.

yeah, this one is nuts.. I found the entire movie
on someones myspace once and saw it there. can't
say I like corpse fucking films, but the gnarly
scenes were some eyebrow raisers..
I'd give this baby a 5/10

crazy shit this one ... don't know what to think
about it. It was a bold try'n all, independent and
whatever, but ... keep your hands of that bunny
you f*cking asshole!!

This is getting the super duper deluxe treatment
from both Cult Epics & Arrow. The Arrow release
has more stuff, and is obviously more expensive,
but I still lean to the limited Cult Epics
release. Personal preference.
