With all things considered, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka should have been a classic film from the moment I pushed play on my DVD player. Honestly, just look at what it has going for it: I'm a fan of blaxploitation films, I love parodies, I think those Wayans kids are brilliant (or at least capable of brilliance), and the entire concept should have just worked. Blaxploitation films are ripe for a good parodying, and who better to do it than the guys who would later go on to film a damned near perfect parody of horror flicks? Sadly, the potential here wasn't realized, and although there are some classic moments, the film as a whole is just sort of there. You've got actors going through the motions and you've got attempts at jokes, but it's just not very funny.
We begin with a look at a young thug who has been found dead in an alleyway, and one of the police detectives lets us know that this poor kid has OG'd - in other words, he died from having too many gold chains wrapped around his neck. His mother (Ja'net DuBois) informs her other son Jack (Keenen Ivory Wayans) about the death in the family, so he returns home from the Army and attempts to find out how this could have happened in their neighborhood. This leads him to discover the presence of a certain Mr. Big (John Vernon), the leader of the crime racket in this neck of the woods, and with that, Jack sets out to put an end to his reign of terror. He enlists the help of his childhood hero John Slade (Bernie Casey), and Slade also gets his former ass-kicking friends Flyguy (Antonio Fargas), Kung Fu Joe (Steve James), Hammer (Isaac Hayes), and Slammer (Jim Brown) to join the fight.
When I said up above that the film wasn't funny, I'm not saying that there aren't moments that will bring a smile to your face. Chris Rock makes a cameo appearance as a tightwad rib joint customer in a scene that gets me cracking up every time I see it, Eve Plumb (Jan from The Brady Bunch) appears as the wife of a former Black Panther in another scene that is highly memorable, and of course, Flyguy's pimp outfit (complete with goldfish swimming in his shoes) is a sight to behold. Yes, there are some great scenes in here, but the problem is that they're few and far between; you have to sit through a lot of material that completely misses the mark to get to these parts, and the result is a film that is best viewed on fast forward during repeat viewings.
I also wasn't a huge fan of the cast found here, as I felt that some of the main actors seemed to have forgotten that they were in a parody instead of a "legit" movie. Keenen Ivory Wayans plays the same role that he always does in these movies and my complaint doesn't really apply to him, Antonio Fargas and Steve James are both a laugh-a-minute, but as for the rest of the people found here... well, let's just say that most of the men are good actors and did a decent enough job with their roles, but comedic geniuses they weren't. I also thought that Dawnn Lewis was absolutely atrocious, and after watching her here, I fail to see how she even managed to score a role in A Different World - yes, she was that bad.
Overall, I was severely disappointed with this one, more so because I genuinely wanted it to succeed. As mentioned, I'm a fan of the movies that it attempts to parody and I think that those Wayans brothers are damned fine writers, but their better days were certainly ahead of them at this point in their careers. 6/10, and that's mainly for the handful of classic scenes; if not for them, the final score would certainly be much lower.
