At a college in Rome, a professor, nicknamed "Dodo" is in a deep depression. His stunningly beautiful wife has just left him for another man. Dodo wants her back very badly and has erotic daydreams about her. A beautiful young student in his class asks him for a ride home and seduces the lucky man, but still he wonders about his wife and her lover.

When it comes to softcore films, nobody does them quite as well as our good pal Tinto Brass. Sure, the man may have a borderline-obsession with the female posterior and yeah, seeing how much those lovely Italian ladies despise shaving may come as a bit of a shock for American audiences, but when it comes to actually providing entertaining, erotic, and - dare I say it - classy softcore films, I've yet to see anyone who can consistently top Brass. This is mainly due to the fact that not only does he give the audience what they came to see (titillation that just barely avoids being branded as hardcore), but he also wraps a genuine storyline that is both engaging and memorable around this material. L'Uomo Che Guarda (aka The Voyeur in English-speaking countries) is no exception, but first, the obligatory synopsis.
We begin with an introduction to the man who goes by the name of Dodō (Francesco Casale) and get a feel for his position in life. The first thing that we learn is that his wife Silvia (Katarina Vasilissa) has left him... well, sort of. The two are still married and Silvia proclaims that their relationship isn't over, but she's moved out of their house and may be seeing other men. What's the deal here? All will be explained in due time, dear readers. We also discover that Dodō's father (Franco Branciaroli) has recently taken a nasty fall down a flight of stairs, and as a result of this, he's now bed-ridden and requires constant support from the smoking hot live-in nurse named Fausta (Cristina Garavaglia). It doesn't take long before we discover that Fausta is treating more than just daddy's injuries if you catch my drift, but more importantly, Dodō discovers that he enjoys watching the two go at it.
Yes, the man is a voyeur, but watching his father go at it with the nurse isn't the only thing that he enjoys watching; you see, the man teaches college classes by day, and he soon gains the attention of a lesbian student named Pascasie (Raffaella Offidani) who - along with her girlfriend - is a bit of an exhibitionist. All of this culminates in our leading man having a deeper understanding of his wife, while his wife also takes a keen interest in his newfound affection for voyeurism. Think I've spoiled the entire movie? Not at all: there's still a few big surprises to be found, some of which were quite shocking.
As you can see, there's much more going on here than what one usually finds in the typical softcore flick, and this is because - as mentioned above - Tinto Brass spends time developing storylines for his characters instead of just plastering some T&A on the screen. Granted, this film was inspired by Alberto Moravia's novel of the same name, and thus, giving Brass complete credit for the storyline would be a bit foolish, but film after film has proven that adapting a halfway decent novel for the big screen is a tough task indeed. Now, when you consider that the man could have probably just thrown some tits on the screen and made the investors and audiences just as happy, I think it goes without saying that he does deserve a good deal of credit here.
Getting back to the actual film at hand, I must say that I really enjoyed the overall package; the storyline is intriguing, the cast members are perfect in their roles, and when the twists start revealing themselves, audiences will certainly find themselves in for a shock. Of course, there's also that little thing about this being a softcore film, and Mr. Brass also delivers on that note as well. We've got numerous ladies here baring it all for the camera, and even though this isn't quite a hardcore film, trust me when I say that these ladies leave little to the imagination. This is the area where Tinto Brass excels; he gives us smut that is, well, smut, but it's done in such a stylish way that you can't help but get sucked into the events taking place on your screen while taking in the eye candy.
Fans of Brass' earlier work would be well-advised to give this one some love when it streets next week. It probably won't change your mind about the softcore genre if you're not a fan of it already, but those of you who do enjoy this sort of thing will find that it doesn't get much better than this. 8/10.
