Connections: The Matrix

During the year 1999, a man named Thomas Anderson (also known as Neo), lives an ordinary life. A software techie by day and a computer hacker by night, he sits alone at home by his monitor, waiting for a sign, a signal - from what or whom he doesn't know - until one night, a mysterious woman named Trinity seeks him out and introduces him to that faceless character he has been waiting for: Morpheus. A messiah of sorts, Morpheus presents Neo with the truth about his world by shedding light on the dark secrets that have troubled him for so long. --IMDb

Reality is bullshit, and the world that we see today is nothing more than a computer generated false world. The real world is a dark and uncivilized place that is controlled by both man and machine. Eventually, machines begin to see humans as an enemy and start attacking for control of the real world called Zion. How do you get to this place? You must free your mind. What is the real world that we know called? The Matrix.

The Matrix is easily one of the best films of the 90's. Why? Good sci-fi story with just enough mix of action to make it entertaining, great plot and character development which makes it intriguing, and not to mention the most advanced special effects [as of 1999] movie goers have ever seen. It proves to be the perfect formula for one of the most successful trilogies to date, and the only trilogy to make Lord of the Rings producers feel threatened.

The movie starts out with the introduction of an underground computer hacker, Neo, who works at a major computer firm in the city (yes, he is in what we know as the real world). Little does he know that someone is watching him, well more than one person is. On one hand, Morpheus is watching him. Morpheus is a captain for the ship Nebuchadnezzar in Zion with a dream of ending the war between humans and machines. On the other hand, the machines attacking Zion have found a way to put themselves into the Matrix, thus Agent Smith is born. Morpheus is running out of time to contact Neo and possibly save Zion from destruction. Yadda Yadda Yadda, Neo is contacted and his mind is freed. He has given up his everyday life to live on a crappy ship with Morpheus, Trinity and company. Why? Because he is "the one" to save Zion from destruction. He doesn't know how he is the one yet but later he will discover how.

There are some really excellent special effects in here along with great laid out scenes. All the action happens inside this false reality, The Matrix. In the Matrix, you can fly...jump long distances...morph...Whatever, anything is possible. The only thing is, if you die in the Matrix, you die for good.

Personally, I didn't understand it at first, but after a second viewing I fell in love with it. I would really recommend this film to any sci-fi genre fan or any action flick buff. This film is so well laid out as far as story, action, and dialogue goes it's just great. The only thing I didn't really like about the movie is the fact that they didn't really explain all too well what the Matrix was or anything like that. Once you see The Matrix Reloaded and eventually The Matrix Revolutions, you'll understand the concept fully. Bottom line, good movie and definitely worth checking out. 9/10

The Matrix in general never grabbed me. Not to mention, there was a rather large story gap between this and Reloaded.

Matrix #1 = Gold. Combine the highway scene of #2 and select parts of three and you have two good movies in the series.
