Connections: Zombie

When a terrorist's body, infected with a stolen chemical, is recovered by the US military, the corpse is cremated, unintentionally releasing the virus/bacteria into the atmosphere over a small island. Soon the infected populace mutate into flesh-hungry zombies, and a trio of soldiers on leave must team up with a group of tourists and board themselves up in an abandoned hotel as they try to fend off the agile and aggressive living dead. --IMDb

Some scientists working for the military are working on a biological weapon called Death One. It'll bring the dead back to life, and the zombie will then crave human flesh. However, as they're transporting the chemical, a group of thieves bust out and attempt to rob them of their container. A gun battle ensues, and one lone guy makes off with the container. A helicopter is sent out to catch this thief, and he ends up being shot. When the bullet hits, he drops the container, breaking it open, and he ends up cutting his hand on the broken glass... letting the chemical get into his bloodstream. He runs off and takes refuge in a nearby motel, but the military track him down and kill him off. When they take his body back to the military headquarters, it's decided that they will cremate the corpse; this leads to the chemicals going up into the air, contaminating some birds that were flying about. One thing leads to another, and the birds attack a few people, those people become zombies, those zombies attack other people, those become zombies..... it doesn't take too long for a problem to arise.

This is a sequel to Zombie (aka Zombi 2) in name only. Sure, it's done by Fulci as well, but the storyline is different from the original, and the zombies are completely different here. It would have been nice if this had picked up directly where Zombi left off, but it was still pretty good nonetheless. The storyline is pretty basic; a couple of army guys meet up with a couple of ladies right before the epidemic starts, and they're trying to stay alive throughout the film. Nothing too unique there, but it all works out in this film.

Instead of being a straight out horror film though, this movie mixes in a bit of humor with the killings. I'm not sure if it was meant to be funny, but some of the scenes here sure got me giggling; for example, the flying head, or the kung-fu jump-from-the-rafters zombies. However, all was fine and dandy in the end, as these humorous scenes didn't take up a whole lot of time, just a few here and there. There were also lots of references to some of the more popular zombie films; such as The Return Of The Living Dead, Night Of The Living Dead, and Day Of The Dead. I doubt most casual horror fans would pick up on these references, as they're pretty subtle; but indeed, they are there and they added a nice touch.

With the Fulci name attached to this, the gore and zombies would have to be nicely done, and that sure wasn't a letdown. The blood flows freely when needed, which was quite often, and the zombies were excellently done for the most part. There was a few that suffered from the handful of makeup to the face deal, but these were only evident in the large mob scenes, so no harm done there.

Overall, if you can tolerate a bit of humor in your zombie flicks (and a god awful looped song that appears no less than five times), check this one out. 7/10.

That song was awful. Every time there was an action sequence they'd play it. And even better was when they cut away in the middle, and came back, and it was still playing the damn song. I wasn't too impressed on this one, but it fits the "so bad it's good" category. It was entertaining, at the very least 6/10
