The Killer Tomatoes franchise is one of those series that never should have worked. Getting away with the first film was almost a miracle, but an equally funny sequel really takes the cake. Unfortunately, the results were not nearly as satisfying when they tried to push their luck with this second sequel.

Not one to give up so easily, Professor Gangreen is at it again. Still aided by his nitwit nephew and a gang of killer tomatoes (that have since evolved fanged faces), Gangreen's new plan is to brainwash the media via his extremely popular talk show. Under the guise of Jeronahew, he has climbed the charts and now puts Oprah to shame. The only one who can stop him now are Lance Boyle, a police officer who never grew past the age of six. He has his own ally in the form of tomatologist Kennedi Johnson. The two can't stand each other, so you know it's a love interest waiting to happen.

As mentioned in Return's review, the first two movies used two completely forms of comedy. The first used a serious take on an outlandishly absurd premise to get its laughs, while the second was more gag comedy. Strike Back continues this trend, but for the most part, they all fall short. Sure, there are a few decent ones here and there. The slasher joke, capped off with tomatoes wearing Jason Voorhees masks was right up there. Sadly, the laughs come far and few between.

John Astin was amazing in the last movie, and the balls to the walls approach worked just as well here. However, Rick Rockwell as Lance Boyle spoils it all. Even in a movie like this, the character is horrible. Sure, nobody's expecting a high level of acting in this franchise, but Rockwell failed to even hit that. Conversely, Crystal Carson's role as Kennedi hits that Tomato standard, no complaints here. Stephen Peace returned as Finnletter, although I'm not entirely sure why. The character was horribly underused, and really should have been the main point of the film. Same goes with FT; there was no reason to include him other than just to say he was there. And perhaps the worst under-usage offense was John Witherspoon. The man has never failed to please, and has a habit of stealing every scene he's in. His few short scenes here are a testament to that, and he definitely should have been given a bigger role.

After going two for two, the Killer Tomatoes franchise falls short. We had some great characters introduced in the last film, and they've all been dropped for the sad group we had here. People looking for more tomato action after the last two would do well not to get their hopes up before popping this one in. 3.5/10.
