The Blob was always one of my favorite monster movies as a kid, but it wasn't until recently that I learned they had released a direct sequel fourteen years later. Perhaps there was a reason it's so unknown.

Bobby's a popular guy, and it just so happens that his birthday is right around the corner, so his girlfriend Lisa is throwing him a mammoth surprise party. Among the invitees is his friend Chester, who has just returned from a drilling operation in the Arctic. Amidst the loving reunion with his wife, she discovers a can of a strange substance his crew discovered up north chilling in her freezer. He wanted to keep it frozen until he can get it to the lab, but the woman has no intention of leaving it in there with her food, so she moves it to the counter. Naturally, said strange substance is the ravenous blob from outer space that was dumped there fourteen years prior, and it quickly thaws and makes a meal of the couple. Meanwhile, Lisa popped in to bring them to the party where she discovers Chester covered in the blob and quickly disintegrating. In a panic, she high tails it to Bobby and brings him, and the sheriff, back to the house, but the creature has since moved on. Obviously, her story isn't taken seriously, so the pair moves on to Bobby's party, but it's no surprise that Lisa can't get into the spirit of things, so Bobby takes her home. Along the way, they find themselves trapped in their car, completely engulfed in a much larger blob. Somehow they're able to fend it off, and now they have to warn everyone about the creature, but who's going to believe them?

The biggest problem I had with Beware! The Blob was how closely it lined up with the original. I've seen remakes that have less in common with the source material than this sequel. Blob takes a victim, main hero sees the attack, nobody believes them, main hero and significant other are trapped by the blob, stumble across its weakness without realizing it, get trapped again, utilizes weakness to save the day. Now take all the heart out of these scenes and you have Beware! Take, for example, when Steve and Jane are trapped in the meat locker and the blob is slowly squeezing in under the door. This is an amazingly tense scene, and you know you just witnessed a key point in the movie. When Bobby and Lisa's car are being engulfed and Bobby kicks the dash, let alone witnessing a key scene, you don't even know what happened. Same with the big climaxes (where the heroes utilize the weakness to save the day): the entire town coming together to combat the blob was a great thing to watch, but in the sequel it's almost deus ex machina.

Also, like the original and its remake, Beware! The Blob is an undeniable product of its decade. Between the grainy technicolor and those sweatered outfits, it absolutely screams 70s. Obviously, mileage may vary on this one, depending on what you think of that particular era; it did absolutely nothing for me though. For what it's worth, the over 80s of the remake drove me up the wall, but I adored the unapologetic 50s-ness of Steve McQueen's romp. Oh, and speaking of the first movie, whoever decided Chester should be watching it on TV should be punched. That irked me to no end.

Basically, I wouldn't recommend anyone go to far out of your way to hunt it down. It's a complete rehash of the original, just a lot more shallow. I guess it's worth watching if you loved that first one, but it's still just a one-time shot. 5/10.
