Connections: Harold & Kumar

Six years have elapsed since Guantanamo Bay, leaving Harold and Kumar estranged from one another with very different families, friends and lives. But when Kumar arrives on Harold's doorstep during the holiday season with a mysterious package in hand, he inadvertently burns down Harold's father-in-law's beloved Christmas tree. To fix the problem, Harold and Kumar embark on a mission through New York City to find the perfect Christmas tree, once again stumbling into trouble at every single turn. --IMDb

There's a lot of classic Christmas movies. A Christmas Story, It's A Wonderful Life, The Grinch, Christmas Vacation... the list goes on and on. All of these movies show the best parts of the human spirit, the love of family, and the ability to rise above bad situations to overcome any obstacle. One thing all these films don't have however is weed smoking, which is why we can all be thankful Harold and Kumar's 3-D Christmas came out this year. Is it a addition to the Christmas classic lineup, or is it just another silly stoner movie? Let's find out.

In A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, we catch back up with our favorite stoners two years after their adventures in Guantanamo Bay. Harold is now an executive at a bank (or seems like it), and Kumar is still good old stoner Kumar. Harold is in full family mode at this point, being married to Maria (his girlfriend from the other films), and is trying desperately to impress her super strict father during the holidays. Kumar is busy being Kumar, hanging around his disgusting apartment and smoking a shitload of weed.

After a random package arrives for Harold at Kumar's apartment, Kumar goes to deliver the mystery gift at Harold's house, and once again the nonsense begins. There's no quest for White Castle, there's no escaping a crazy prison, this time it's just a good old fashioned Christmas adventure in the vein of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. If you've seen either of the other two films, you know how these movies work... random fucked up situation followed by random fucked up situation.

One of the more interesting parts of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is that it's completely self aware of what it is (oooooooh, meta). There's multiple shoutouts to either jokes about 3D being stupid, their old adventures in the other movies, how ridiculous and impossible some of their situations are, and there's even a joke about when Kal Penn worked in Washington D.C. Little things like this, while sometimes cheap and corny, actually add to the nonsense that this film brings.

The 3D effects are nothing new, but the effects are put to decent enough use, a.k.a., a 3D claymation dick right in your face. Obviously a comedy film isn't going to have crazy effects like Avatar, but at least there's nothing that's too intolerable.

The only big downer to this film is that the jokes are becoming extremely predictable. All of the recurring jokes that were in the past two movies are once again in this movie, and this time you can see the setups and punchlines from a mile away. While they're obviously stoners, there's absolutely no character growth from either character from the first movie to this one, and they have the same exact fights that they had in the first two movies.

It goes to show that maybe Harold and Kumar should stop at a trilogy and not go for another movie in a few years. A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas once again ends on a "closing" note, but the final conversation in the flick is open-ended enough to lead into a fourth movie if they so wanted.

So in response to my beginning statement: Is this a Christmas "classic" kind of movie?

Oddly enough, I think yes. It has a really happy / cute ending that you really wouldn't expect from a dick joke film, and while it's not a movie for the whole family, I'd say anyone from 16-40 would definitely enjoy watching this with all of their friends around the holidays.

I mean, it's a Harold and Kumar movie. If you don't like or expect anything else other then boobs, weed, and poop jokes, you're watching the wrong movie.

8/10.
