Connections: Wishmaster

In this fourth series of the hell-raising Wishmaster, the Djinn unleashes his undying love and three wishes on a beautiful new victim named Lisa, whose crucial third wish is one that the Wishmaster cannot fulfill without leaving a trail of terror, devastation and blood in his wake. The evil brotherhood of the Djinns shall awaken from the flames of Hell. As the third wish is made, humankind had better be prepared for the apocalypse. Woken up once again, the repulsive Djinn returns to wreck the life of more innocent victims with his deadly fulfillments. In order to prevent the release of the evil brotherhood of the Djinns from Hell, Lisa must find a way to destroy the Djinn to stop the prophecy from being fulfilled. --IMDb

After an amazing first two movies, Chris Angel did horrible, disgusting things to the Wishmaster franchise with his third entry. With only a weekend between that and the filming of Wishmaster 4, I certainly didn't expect it to be much more than horrible.

Ah, that happy couple. Lisa and Sam have just bought a house together, and spend every waking moment having sex, riding on Sam's motorcycle, and basically just living in bliss. Unfortunately, it all comes to an end when a crash on that motorcycle leaves him a bitter paraplegic wallowing in self pity. Although Lisa, her love pure, has stood by him, he's convinced himself that she's just waiting around for a piece of the settlement. Speaking of the settlement, the lawyer handling their case, Steven Verdel, has fallen for the girl, and bought her a chest with a red jewel. We all know where this is going, and Lisa awakens the evil djinn living inside that gem. After emerging, it takes over Steven's identity, and easily tricks Lisa into making her wishes. The third one, the wish that brings Hell on Earth once granted, presents a problem however. Lisa wishes she could love Steven for who he was; and since love can not be created with magic (or something), the djinn is in quite the pickle. Now he has to force Lisa to fall in love with him the old fashioned way, all the while dealing with an archangel that has descended to kill Lisa or the djinn before the wish can be granted.

You know, during the first half of the movie, I realized that I was actually pleasantly surprised. Sure, it was certainly nowhere near the bar set by the first two, but it was actually fairly entertaining and Angel seemed to have learned a bit of self restraint. Yeah, the transformation from djinn to human still had that annoying red flash, but the defacing angle is back and that scene and had some very nice visuals to go with it. And even better, they had taken that annoying echo effect off of his voice. I even liked the way he went about tricking Lisa into making her wishes. Very subtle, using her precarious situation to get the job done. But after she makes that third wish, it's back to the same old schlock I expected from the beginning.

With the whole premise of the movie being that the prophecy has been fulfilled, there are things I wanted to see. I wanted to see djinn everywhere. I wanted to see the entire Earth engulfed in fire, pain and chaos. I wanted to see an intelligently written, clever solution to save everything. Obviously, I didn't get anything like that. All I got was false advertising. The prophecy was not fulfilled. It's just more of the djinn trying to fulfill said prophecy; we've been doing this for four movies now. And that hunter angle was fucking stupid too. Who the fuck wants mindless sword fighting in a Wishmaster movie? Not no one. And the worst offense of all. The most grievous thing done in these last two travesties. In his hopes of understanding human love to make Lisa fall for him, the djinn begins to get a little smitten himself. Fucking stop it.

And so, the Wishmaster franchise has come to an end. Fuck everyone who was involved in these last two movies. 3/10.
