You know, I don't really care what people say: I loved Hostel. It was definitely a "love it or hate it" type of movie, and I obviously sided with the first group of people. While I will concede that it wasn't high art by any means, it did deliver exactly what it promised... lots of blood, lots of gore, and lots of creative deaths. The sequel was a step down in terms of quality, but it still wasn't horrible. Severely lacking, yes, but if you loved the first one like I did, you definitely had to have found something you liked in part two. So, here we are with part three, a direct-to-video sequel with Eli Roth nowhere to be found. How does it hold up?
The story centers around Scott (Brian Hallisay) and Carter (Kip Pardue), two friends who are heading to Vegas for Scott's bachelor party. Scott is getting married next week, and thus, Carter is bound and determined to get our hero liquored up and knee-deep in hookers before the big day - you know how it goes. There, they join up with their other friends Justin (John Hensley) and Mike (Skyler Stone), and the four of them are having a grand old time. They soon meet a pair of escorts - Kendra (Sarah Habel) and Nikki (Zulay Henao) - who promise them a good time with some freaky sex... if they would be willing to leave the strip and head out to a remote area. Naturally, the heroes oblige, and they quickly find themselves prisoners of the elite club where rich people pay for the privilege of murdering people in the grisliest ways imaginable.
Let's start with the positive. I enjoyed the storyline and how it played out, and even though it was nothing original (even for the series), I can't say that it bored me or left me reaching for the remote. Also, since the film takes place in Las Vegas, they decided to incorporate gambling into the festivities, which was an interesting touch. It's a shame that it wasn't explored a little more, but it's the thought that counts. I also enjoyed some of the sets, and hey, there's a lot of titties on display. Alright, I'm starting to stretch it for the positive stuff, so let's move on.
The big problem with the movie is simple: the kills are tame at best and downright goofy at worst. The whole selling point of the series is gore and ghastly ways of mutilating people, much like the staple of the Saw series is inventive traps and... well, ghastly ways of mutilating people. We didn't get that here. The absolute best kill of the movie was a scene where one man stabs another repeatedly in the stomach until he dies, which was good because of the unflinching brutality of the setup, but let's be real: you don't stand around the water cooler talking about a simple stabbing death. There is a face-peeling kill that could have been good with a better budget, and there's still another kill that was six shades of silly (hint: it involves death by roaches). The others were tame and aren't worth mentioning.
As if that wasn't bad enough, the acting is pretty atrocious. Granted, you don't pick up a movie like this for phenomenal acting, but "decent" acting is always a perk. There are a couple of guys here that do hit that "decent" mark, but that is the best that you will find - everybody else is below average or downright awful. If I ever make a movie and one of my actors can't convince the camera that they are in pain, I'm going to just kick them in the crotch and film the results. The guys responsible for this film should have tried that.
Overall, I can't really recommend the film, and this is coming from a fan of the series. I'm not one of those reviewers who hated every other movie in a series and, lo and behold, hated the latest release. No, I loved the first movie and sort of enjoyed the second, but this one? It just didn't do much for me. I can't say that the movie was positively awful as I did enjoy the storyline to a certain extent, but that's definitely not enough to get a recommendation out of me. 4/10.

Maybe it just caught me in a good mood, but I
didn't hate it as much as the other ones. Still
wouldn't recommend it; the roach kill was lame and
the ending was just silly, but it takes the
dubious honor of "best of the series."

I haven't seen this. But, I loved and own Part 2.
First it starred Lauren German who is HOT. Second,
it had both sides of the story which made it
fascinating. The problem with both one and two is
the gore just wasn't worth the wait.
