Did I Spit on Your Grave, which was itself a remake, really need a sequel? Probably not, but we got one anyway... in title form, at least. This movie really isn't a sequel at all, truth be told: it has the same theme (rape revenge), but that's the extent of the connection. Still, the rape revenge flick has become its own little niche genre over the years, with countless titles out there sharing similar themes - how bad could one more addition be?

The plot is as basic as it gets with these movies. Katie (Jemma Dallender) is an aspiring model who needs fresh pictures for her portfolio, so she turns to a local ad which promises free photography sessions. A date is set for her photoshoot, and upon arriving, she meets three European guys: photographer Ivan (Joe Absolom) and his assistants Georgy (Yavor Baharov) and Nicolay (Aleksandar Aleksiev). It quickly becomes obvious that they're wanting more than just your basic modeling photos out of her, so she storms out and goes home.

That night, she awakens to Georgy in her bedroom, and he then proceeds to tie her up and rape her. After he's done, he calls the other two guys and asks for help in cleaning up the mess that he's made. They agree, and they do so by taking her back to Bulgaria with them... where she is sold out as a sex slave until they decide to bury her alive. Unfortunately for them, she escapes from her shallow grave and sets out to get revenge on everyone who raped and hurt her.

So yeah, the plot is very thin, but that's not unusual for movies like this. There's about ten minutes of setup, followed by a lengthy rape scene, followed by an abundance of torture and more rape, insert about ten minutes of plot to shake things up, back to the torture, and cap things off with her getting her revenge. Roll credits. Honestly, I think most readers can already decide whether or not this is something that they want to see.

I will say that I thought the split of "Katie gets tortured" and "Katie gets her revenge" was a little lopsided, though. I'm not one of those prudes who gets completely upset about depictions of rape and violence, and in fact, I actually support it in movies like this. The goal of horror is to rattle the viewer, and you can't exactly do that without showing anything. However, it seemed like this part of the movie went on for far too long, and her revenge is then quickly rushed so that they could wrap up the movie.

In fact, it almost seemed like the rape and torture were the focal points of the movie, with her revenge being there as nothing more than an afterthought. Katie is put through hell in this movie, to be blunt about it. She suffers greatly at the hands of all involved, and it was actually a little hard to watch some of this material. She is physically and mentally broken at the end of it, and having watched it all play out, the end result is definitely believable. I have to give the movie credit for handling that exceptionally well. However, she then begins her crusade for vengeance, and it seems rushed and a little weak.

I mean, one kill is nothing more than her drowning a guy in a toilet - that's the best that they could come up with? Another guy has his balls crushed in a vice, which was highly painful to watch (and yes, it is shown in graphic detail), but that's really the only highlight on her side of the pain infliction. Oh, and there's a "slow death by infection" scene that was pretty gross to watch, but I certainly wouldn't call it a highlight.

As for the acting, I'll give the antagonists a thumbs up for being appropriately vile and disgusting, but I can't say that they were anything memorable. I don't think that many people will bitch about their performances, but they certainly won't reach David Hess' level of notoriety for their acting chops. Jemma Dallender in the lead is a mixed bag though. She's perfectly fine as the average woman at the beginning of the film; this is another case of "nothing to gripe about, nothing to write home about." However, she really excels in the role when she is being raped and abused. Her screams of anguish, facial expressions, and bodily contortions greatly enhance the scenes, and I don't think that they would have been nearly as effective with a lesser actress. However, during her spree of vengeance, she's either meek and mild (see my "normal woman" judgement of her) or a raving psychopath. It is the latter that sort of hurts my opinion of her performance - some people just don't do crazy well, and Dallender is a shining example of that. Watching her verbally let her rage out on her victims is a little awkward, but not for the right reasons.

So, plot originality and performances aside, do I recommend I Spit on Your Grave 2? Sure, for some. If you're a fan of these movies, or if you enjoyed the previous movie (original or remake, take your pick), you'll probably like this one as well. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, but it does use the tried and true formula in a fairly entertaining fashion. Don't go in expecting some new classic in the genre or brilliant new ideas, and you might have some fun with it. 7/10.
