Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the very definition of 'bittersweet'. On the one hand, there's been an incredibly small amount of positive things to say ever sine the third moie and the last thing we need is another entry. On the other, at least their finally putting it out of its (and my) misery.
After a quick recap of the series, Alice reveals that the truce offered by Albert Wesker at the end of the last movie was a trap meant to lure in the remaining survivors. Speaking of the other survivors, after killing a dragon (why was there a dragon?) she's visited by the Red Queen, Umbrella's omniscient security AI. She tells Alice that the five thousand or so survivors scattered around the world don't stand a chance unless the single vial of antidote is released into the air within forty-eight hours. The kicker: that antidote is in The Hive, the massive subterranean complex buried beneath the crater that used to be Raccoon City. After meeting up with some other survivors, they enter the Hive to end Umbrella's threat once and for all, and the movie-going public at large breathes a collective sigh of relief.
Ugh, what garbage. Somehow this movie has reached a level of plot deprivation that Michael Bay can only dream about. After the twenty minute exposition dump that sets things in motion, there is not a shred of story or character development and we're "treated" to eighty minutes of the most pointless, inane action scenes imaginable. With no context behind the characters' actions, nonstop gun-fighting gets old extremely quickly. Yes, this movie showed us people gunning down countless monsters and actually made it boring. Hell, they could have taken the logical route and showed us Wesker's betrayal in the first half before moving the second half of the movie into The Hive. At least then we would have not only had some continuity with the last movie, but we'd have had an actual story to tell. But no, we're just going to tell you it happened between sequels and replace it with nothing. Not to mention, the spots were so stupid I'm convinced that only a child could have thought of them. At one point, they have a collection of oil barrels they set on fire and pour over the edge of the tower. Fair enough. However, what we see is a veritable Niagara Falls of lava pouring over every inch. I don't expect much in the way of realism with this franchise, but what the hell?
I am so happy this crap has come to an end. Hopefully, after enough time has passed, Hollywood will feel comfortable rebooting the franchise in the horror mold the video games used. And, you know, with basic competence. 1/10 for both the modicum of entertainment the mindless entertainment offered and for Ruby Rose, who between John Wick: Chapter 2 and her small roll here have me looking forward to her future action films.
