Stan Ross was a baseball superstar who turned his back on the game years ago when he finally hit 3,000 hits. Years later, he's now a successful, self-made entrepreneur whose many businesses revolve around his title: Mr. 3000. But a clerical error has proven that Stan is just short three hits of his spectacular hit record. Now, with time on his side and the potential to be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame, Stan must return back to the game and get back his title. But things have changed with age, and as Stan finds out, it's not too easy to get back into the game when he hasn't played for years, and he's nearing 50. --IMDb

Starting the movie up, we find Stan Ross (Bernie Mac), the star batter for the Milwaukee Brewers, getting ready to hit his 3,000th base hit and get himself into the Hall Of Fame. He manages to do so and immediately retires after the game, citing his hatred of the team and the game as his reason for quitting. He goes on to be known as Mr. 3000 in all of his endorsement deals and rakes it quite the load of cash. Nine years later, the baseball higher-ups find out that three of the base hits that Ross made didn't count, as they were accidentally counted twice in the record books. During his time off from the game, Ross has grown to be quite out of shape and has lost his touch, but decides to go back to playing in order to secure his spot in baseball history. His quest to regain the Mr. 3000 status, his rivalry with the new star batter T-Rex Pennebaker (Brian J. White), and his attempts at getting his groove on with ESPN reporter Mo Simmons (Angela Bassett) round out the rest of the movie.

While I'm not really a fan of sports comedies or sports in general, I decided to check this out anyway due to me being a fan of Bernie Mac. I'd imagine that my dislike of baseball may have played a part in my final verdict, but I found the movie to be pretty boring for the most part. There's a few good laughs spread throughout, mainly from the Japanese guy who can't quite get the art of cussing figured out ("You have a hole in your ass!"), and of course, there's your typical feel-good ending that seems to be obligatory for a movie like this. For a comedy though, the laughs were much too few and far between, especially from the star of the show Bernie Mac. He did great with the material he had, but it seemed as though the director wasn't trying to portray him as a source of humor with the exception of two or three scenes. As much as I like the guy, he really doesn't work out too well as a serious actor. Combine that with a storyline that drags for a good hunk of the run-time, and you end up with a pretty dull movie. The movie may have worked out a bit better if it didn't have so many subplots going on during the run-time; there's the media blasting him, Stan trying to get back together with Mo, Stan not getting along with his team, Stan trying to get the team to win their games, Stan having a rivalry with T-Rex, the obligatory asshole manager, and of course, Stan trying to get his last three hits. With the exception of the main premise of the movie, that being Stan attempting to get 3,000 hits, none of these subplots were even remotely entertaining.

Maybe one would enjoy this movie more if they were a fan of baseball, but as for myself, I'd put it in the do-not-rent category. The laughs were scarce (and mostly covered in the trailers), the storyline was slow and drug out, and the majority of the movie was a downright mess. Bernie Mac did a great job as an actor, but one man can not save a movie when it faces the problems that this one did. 3/10.

I could have seen Bernie Mac play a better role. This was a fairly decent comedy as the reviewer said someone would most likely enjoy this a bit more if they were a fan of baseball.

I'm glad this movie didn't rely TOO heavily on racial stereotypes, but it wasn't as funny as his television show.

Does he have two shows because the one I've seen him in isn't really that funny. Oh, this movie sucked. 3/10
