A documentary team gets a grant to do a film on a rare fatal disease that is attacking homeless people. However, they quickly find the film too depressing. Ducking into a nightclub, they discover a young Manhattan comedienne and decide instead to follow her as she makes the circuit of auditions in L.A. as she tries to get a TV pilot. Unfortunately, she has failed to tell her boyfriend of this move. He decides he will trail her out west. There, the boyfriend runs into an old friend who has already made a break on a TV pilot. Seizing the opportunity, the actress turns her attentions to the established actor. However, the actress goes nowhere in auditions, but her ex-boyfriend is suddenly noticed and becomes the next hot prospect.

In December of 1995, a film crew from the New York School of Art received a $25,000 grant to create a documentary about a rare fatal disease common to homeless people. While shooting in the Lower East Side of New York, the documentary crew, feeling severely depressed, wandered into an industry sponsored "underground" comedy performance club. The film crew abandoned their rare fatal disease project and used the $25,000 grant to follow Susan to Los Angeles for Pilot Season. For those unaware, pilot season is the 120 days between January and April when actors try to land parts in the new television programs.
Susan neglected to tell her boyfriend, Max, that she is moving to LA until the night before. He decides that he'll move out there with her and help support her. When he gets to LA, things start to go downhill between the two. She starts to see a lot of TV's John Devlin and Max begins getting a bit suspicious of the two. He eventually sneaks his way into his private tennis court, which makes Susan lose it. She never saw Devlin again after that. During all that, she's goes to several television pilot auditions. She runs into people that she use to talk to, but managed to make it big in the business.
None of her auditions go well until the last week of the pilot season. She gets offered a character on a show called "Who's The Caboose". After all that time she spent trying to get a part, she turns it down. When she goes to inform her manager, Jason Reemer, he can't believe what he's hearing. The two get into a big argument and he resigns managing her any longer. Susan has no other choice but to move back to LA. When word gets to Max, he thinks up a way to get Susan her own television show. But first it's going to take some black-mailing and the documentary crew.
David Cross made a couple of appearances in the film. He worked as an employee at a taco stand, as well as a cater at a party Susan was attending. He had screen time of about five minutes, which ended up being the best moments of the movie. Susan and Max were played by Sarah Silverman and Sam Seder. Silverman did a pretty good job with her part. Seder was decent enough, not really that good though. His mood changes shifted in just about every scene, which made it a bit hard to keep up with his intentions and feelings for Susan. Andy Dick was Susan's manager, Jason Reemer. Just like most of his characters, this one was no different. He seemed to be trying too hard to be funny.
