Connections: Viva La Bam

A show that follows Bam Margera (of Jackass and CKY fame) in his attempts to anger his parents. Unlike CKY or Jackass, Viva La Bam focuses mainly on the torture of Bam's parents and less on harmful stunts. --IMDb

Bam Margera, that wacky skater kid from CKY and Jackass, stars in his own television show where he basically does the same thing he's always done... raise a bit of hell, do crazy stunts, and make the home audience laugh. His show revolves around him living at home with parents Phil and April, and the various things he does to entertain himself and / or torture them. His crew of Ryan Dunn, Raab Himself, Rake Yorn, and Brandon DiCamillo is around to help in the schemes he cooks up, while Tim Glomb is around to help build things. If you've seen CKY or Jackass, you already know what you're in for; Bam setting up a skate park inside his house, digging a tunnel into Don Vito's house (Vito is Phil's even larger brother), and instigating a city-wide "Don't Feed Phil" day are just some of the things these kids do in the eight episodes featured in this DVD set.

Now then, the series is filled with fart jokes and off-kilter humor, so it's definitely not for everybody. I personally enjoyed it, but your mileage may vary. The point of this review, however, is to take a look at the DVD set itself, not just the core episodes. First up, we have all eight episodes from season one, and if the box is to be believed, they are presented in an uncensored format. This isn't entirely true, however... while some profanity does slip through, a good chunk of it is still censored out. What gets censored and what does not seems to be entirely random; for example, one line of one of the episodes is presented as "What the fuck is this ****?" Why fuck was allowed to air but shit wasn't is beyond me, but that's a constant nuisance throughout the episodes. Also, all of the trademarks / t-shirts / nudity are still blurred out; now, I wasn't going into this looking forward to seeing male ass on the screen, but considering that the DVD is supposed to be uncensored, it would have been nice to not have half of the screen blurred out during such scenes. Also, each of the eight episodes are extremely short. Watching these, you can see just how much more MTV values commercials over content; while each episode took up thirty minutes of time on television, here, they only take fourteen-sixteen minutes. A total time of just a bit over two hours is the running time for eight episodes, which is actually pretty sad. There's also a commentary track available for each episode, but I've yet to listen to this so I'll hold off on passing judgment.

On the bonus disc, we get a number of extras. Nine deleted and extended scenes are the highlight, with some being hilarious and others making it quite clear as to why they weren't aired. One such extended scene is a much longer version of Bam building a skate park in his house and all of the skaters skating it. What originally took up about five minutes of time on television receives about fifteen minutes here... if you're a fan of skating and building ramps, you may enjoy this one. The highlight of the deleted scenes easily goes to the extended scavenger hunt episode. There's a huge chunk of the tasks presented here that didn't make it into the episode, and I believe that the entire thing runs about twenty minutes with nothing from the original episode included. The rest of the scenes fall somewhere in between; some raise a chuckle, such as DiCamillo's encounter with a bee, while others are just lame (Bam poking people in the face with a dildo tied to a fishing pole).

Speaking of the scavenger hunt, the next bonus feature is the scavenger hunt list presented in its entirety... well, not exactly. There's a total of fifty-one items here, but about ten are censored out for some unknown reason. Q&A**Holes is the next feature, which asks the same set of questions to each of the cast members on a text screen. This would have been interesting had the answers to the questions actually come from the people involved and not some executive putting together a DVD. Browsing through the answers, it's easy to tell that the actual people being "questioned" weren't involved... Phil's favorite band is CKY (even though there's an entire episode dedicated to his obsession with Elvis), while April's is HIM? Behind The Scenes is next in a segment involving ten (or so) pictures from the episodes. Nothing to see here, so we move along to the final segment which is a music video collection. We have four videos here: CKY's "Sporadic Movement", Clutch's "The Mob Goes Wild", The DiCamillo Sisters' "But Why's It So Cold?", and Turbonegro's "Sell Your Body (To The Night)." CKY and Turbonegro get their videos aired uncensored (I didn't notice anything that would need censoring), but Clutch and The DiCamillo Sisters receive the heavy censoring treatment... it's so bad, in fact, that the audio portion of The DiCamillo Sisters' video is nearly impossible to listen to due to the constant bleeping.

If you've never seen the episodes or would like to rewatch them, this would be a nice DVD to purchase. However, if you're like me and picked it up just to see things in their uncensored glory, this one be one to avoid. There's some good moments on the bonus disc, with the extended scavenger hunt scene and The DiCamillo Sisters' video (even though it's censored to hell and back) being the highlights... however, this bonus disc really could have used some better content and seems as though it were extremely rushed. Overall, I'd give an 8/10 to the actual episodes, and a 3/10 to this DVD set.

Thank you, Bury. I've been saying the same thing ever since I saw his dumb-ass on his own show. Really, I've never found anything this little piss-ant's done amusing in the least. One day his dad just needs to back-hand his punk ass.
