Connections: Viva La Bam

A show that follows Bam Margera (of Jackass and CKY fame) in his attempts to anger his parents. Unlike CKY or Jackass, Viva La Bam focuses mainly on the torture of Bam's parents and less on harmful stunts. --IMDb

Bam returns in not one, but two new seasons in this DVD package. After the events of the first season, the Margera family has moved to a new house that has been decorated and styled according to Bam's wishes... no more of that normal, average-joe junk that was found in the first season. The other change that has popped up in these two seasons is that Bam's crew now lives with him... Brandon DiCamillo, Rake Yohn, Raab Himself, and Ryan Dunn now share quarters with Phil, Ape, and Bam, leading to all sorts of trouble in the household. Trouble indeed arises in these seasons, as Bam hosts a Slayer concert in his back-yard, erects a tree-top casino, holds a Fat-Boy Faceoff for Phil and Don Vito, and journeys to Mardi Gras among other things.

As in my review for the first season, I'm not going to run down each of the episodes or comment too much on the quality of the show itself. Just like Jackass, Wildboyz, CKY and all of the other shows of this nature, you're either going to love them or hate them. I personally enjoy the series, even though these two seasons were a bit of a step down in quality for the show. There's still a lot of hilarious moments, but too much of these seasons seemed staged solely for the purpose of the show. Fans of the show shouldn't be disappointed, however, as there's still lots of good stuff here, including one of the better episodes of the series in which Johnny Knoxville (of Jackass fame) squares off against Bam in a pranking contest.

After the "uncensored" release of season one, Paramount listened to the fans and finally gave us a (for the most part) truly uncensored release of these two seasons. You see, season one claimed to be uncensored and lived up to that claim by giving us an uncensored release... uncensored, that is, except for a large chunk of the profanity, any sort of nudity, trademarks, and sensitive information. While a few words still get beeped out here and there, and all of the nudity, trademarks, and sensitive information is still blurred out, it's definitely a step in the right direction for those who despise censorship.

While the censorship side of things is definitely better in this release, the extras are severely lacking here. What follows is a wrap-up on what's included on the bonus disc.

The deleted scenes section is the meat of the bonus disc but as with the Random-Ass moments (more on this in a bit), there really isn't too much new material from the second season. Deleted scenes from this season takes up thirty minutes, and while there's a few new bits here, most of it is just extended stuff that we've already seen. Some of this is quality material, but for the most part, it's easy to see why these extended parts didn't make it into the final cut of the episodes they were pulled from. The deleted scenes from season three are much more plentiful, clocking in at one hour and ten minutes. Not only is there much more material here, but there's also much more in the way of new material that didn't make it into the episodes at all. This section was by far the best part of the bonus disc, but why they couldn't make the season two section this good is beyond me.

In the music videos section, we have two (uncensored this time!) music videos - HIM's "And Love Said No" and Turbonegro's "Fuck The World". With all of the remaining time on this disc, they should have at least filled this section out a little more, but sadly, these are the only two included. The other feature in this section is a Making The Video featurette on HIM's "And Love Said No" video hosted by Bam Margera and Ville Valo (lead singer of HIM). This runs for about ten minutes, and turns out to be pretty boring in the end... there's none of the typical Margera hijinks, nor is there any real insight regarding the video itself. Instead, we just watch them talk for a bit and see a whole lot of cameras recording Valo for the video. Fans of Bam will likely be disappointed by this feature, while fans of HIM may enjoy it a bit more, but probably not too much more.

Next up, we have another Random-Ass Moments section. This was one of the highlights of season one's release, but such as the case with the videos, this section is severely lacking on this disc. For starters, it only runs for ten minutes... one would think that with two seasons worth of material to pick from, they could have put just a bit more than ten minutes worth of stuff here. Then, when you watch what these ten minutes consist of, you're likely to come away even more disappointed. You see, this really isn't ten minutes worth of scenes that you didn't see on the show; instead, it's about five minutes worth of material from various episodes extended out to ten minutes. Whereas a scene may have taken one minute in the original episode, here it'll run for two minutes with a bit of extra comments and actions from whoever was participating in that particular scene. Again, with two seasons to pick from, one would think that there would be more to choose from for this section.

The final feature is a photo gallery with various pictures from the two seasons. I looked at about ten pictures and gave up on this feature, so I've no idea on how many photos are included... but based on the ones that I looked at, this feature is nothing great. We see a few shots from the episodes, a few posed shots of Bam and his crew, and a few backstage-type shots.

As is the case with season one, this is a worthy investment if you'd like to watch the episodes once again in their uncensored glory. There's nothing much to see here that you didn't already see on television with the exception of a few "fucks" and "shits"... while it's nice to not hear constant beeping, I don't think this qualifies as a good reason to rush out and pick up this set. However, if you're just interested in this for the deleted scenes and other various bonus materials, I'd advise a skipping of this set. With the obvious exception of the episodes themselves, there's really not a whole lot to see here. 7/10 for the episodes found in these two seasons, 5/10 for this DVD release.
