Maybe I'm just getting sick of the whole zombie genre. Maybe a large portion of the recent offerings from said genre just aren't up to snuff. Maybe I shouldn't have picked up six zombie movies in a row: that's just asking to get burnt out on them. Or maybe, just maybe, Zombies Gone Wild flat out sucked. I suppose that's a little harsh seeing as how I did get a couple of laughs out of the package, but it's certainly not something that I'm going to recommend.

As if the title didn't give it away, Zombies Gone Wild is not a straight-forward zombie flick; instead, it's a film that aims to blend together aspects of the gross-out teen comedies such as American Pie, the gut-munching zombies of Day of the Dead, and the massive amounts of top-popping college girls that Girls Gone Wild made famous (well, not so much the last one, but it would have been nice). To that end, we ride along with a trio of losers - Marty (Dave Competello), Randy (Chris Saphire), and LeRoy (Dominique Rochelle) - who are out in search of some "poon" for spring break. They finally find some, but unfortunately for them, it turns out to be zombie poon... and lots of it.

I've said this a couple of times in various other negative reviews that I've written, but it bears repeating here. I thought this movie sounded interesting and had some potential, otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered with it. I think the plot and general idea behind Pretty Woman is stupid and it's completely outside of my preferred genres; therefore, I'm not going to give it a chance and I'll never write a review for it. Does that make it a bad movie? No, it's just not something that I'm interested in. Now, I thought the plot and general idea behind Zombies Gone Wild was interesting and could have gone somewhere, so I decided to check it out. I mention all of this so that nobody can claim that I went into this film with expectations of a horror classic or that it simply wasn't the type of movie that I'm interested in. No, I am the target audience for this film: I love zombie movies, I love gross-out comedies, and I have absolutely no problems with low-budget cinema.

The problem with the film is that it simply doesn't achieve any of the goals that it set out to achieve: the comedy isn't funny, the zombie action isn't horrific, the amount of gore is pitifully low, and although that Gone Wild part of the title may lead you to believe otherwise, there's very little skin to be seen. Well then, what does the film have going for it? We watch as the guys drive around in their van and talk... and argue... and fart... and bicker... and drive... and insult one another... and fart a few more times... and then, they drive around some more. I kid you not, the first hour and change of the movie takes place almost entirely inside this van, and although that could have worked in a different type of movie (and with some better material), it simply fell flat here.

When the zombie action finally kicks in towards the end, it's a very forgettable affair to say the least. I have to give them credit for putting together some good makeup jobs on a couple of the walking corpses, but a few zombies that look decent will only get you so far when you're trying to get through the last half hour of your film. If you're thinking that maybe the gore will save things, think again: the gore is kept to a bare minimum here, and in fact, only one guy dies in a "kill" scene which is unbelievably bad. Before I hear any cries of "but it's low budget!", I'd like to point out that I have a whole section devoted to Troma movies on my DVD shelf, so I know low budget when I see it and I think that I can safely say that that's definitely not an excuse for effects this bad.

Avoid. As mentioned, it did provide a few good laughs (you can ignore that bit of praise if you don't find farts and poop to be prime comedic material) and some of the zombies looked pretty good, but that's certainly not enough to warrant a recommendation. 2/10.
