This is the story of three gentle persons: Paul Rivers, an ailing mathematician lovelessly married to an English émigré; Christina Peck, an upper-middle-class suburban housewife, happily married and mother of two little girls; and Jack Jordan, an ex-convict who has found in his Christian faith the strength to raise a family. They will be brought together by a terrible accident that will change their lives. By the final frame, none of them will be the same as they will learn harsh truths about love, faith, courage, desire and guilt, and how chance can change our worlds irretrievably - forever.

Even though this film's a few years old (released in '03) I had always heard good things about it; really good things, but had never gotten a chance to see it. Then one day there it was so I picked it up and watched it. The fact of the matter is that it's overrated. It was good, a nice film, but not the Mecca people made it out to be.
The story circles around three main characters, Paul Rivers (Sean Penn), Cristina Peck (Naomi Watts), and Jack Jordan (Benicio Del Toro) whose lives become intertwined after a tragic accident. I say circling because of the way they use overlapping timelines and un-chronological storytelling for the characters, which did not work out as well as it does for other films (i.e. Memento or Reservoir Dogs). This didn't really hurt the film but it didn't help it much either.
The acting from these three (and all the others) were really good thanks to their acting teachers (if they had any) and a strong screenplay from Guillerno Arriaga (Powder Keg, Bable). The direction of the film was real nice too from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (also Powder Keg and Bable).
Everything about the film was good, especially the ending that tied everything together but there was just something about it that just didn't cut my meat. There was the sad drama, the bits of action, the good dialogue but something wasn't right and it screwed everything else up.
Thanks to that mystery something I'm giving 21 grams 8.5/10.

Well executed and heartbreaking, at times -- one
of the best films from that year. Benicio del
Toro is always engaging and Sean Penn and Naomi
Watts deliver some of their best work ever in this
film. I forgot how much I enjoyed it -- not to
mention the underrated, but always amazing Melissa
Leo. 9.5/10.
