In a women's prison in Brazil, the inmates are young and beautiful, the warden is a sadist, all but one of the guards are cruel, and the nurse is an incompetent cuckoo. To make it difficult for the inmates to hide contraband, they wear no underwear. They are alternately murderous and orgiastic with each other, and they engage in sex play with some of the guards. The warden pimps out inmates to wealthy lesbians. With the help of the nurse and under the cover of Carnival, three inmates stage an escape. Once out, will they contrive to stay undiscovered, or will their natures guarantee an ill-fated end to their attempt?

Bare Behind Bars is a women in prison flick which features all of the usual attributes that go along with that sleazy little subgenre. There, I could just end the review right now and I'm pretty sure that you readers will have formed your own opinions about whether or not this is worth tracking down, but I won't do you fine readers like that. It's pretty amazing that this sort of thing managed to spawn its own subgenre of films, but it's true: there's almost as many of these movies as there are direct-to-video vampire movies, and just like those low-budget bloodsucker films, most of these exploitation outings are on the lower end of the quality spectrum. However, I couldn't let this site go a single day longer without one of the most (if not the most) explicit and over-the-top women-in-prison film tucked away in its archives, so here we are with Brazil's contribution to the genre.
Like most of these films, the plot is pretty thin and you could miss it if you sneeze at an inopportune moment. The real selling point of the film is to see all of the usual staples of the genre: the sadistic warden, the guards who trade favors for lesbian sex, the nurses who trade favors for lesbian sex, the prisoners who trade favors with one another for lesbian sex, and of course, the infamous shower scenes - lots of the infamous shower scenes. There's even a small thing to be found about the warden trading off the prettier women into sexual slavery, but that little subplot was seemingly thrown in only to show some lesbian sex on the beach. The storyline, once it's finally revealed, revolves around a trio of women who want to escape. Their plan is concocted and acted out about an hour and ten minutes into the film, they then spread terror (and their legs) in the slums of Brazil for about twenty minutes, and we have ourselves a film.
So yes, there's not a whole lot going for this in terms of originality or plot, but there sure are a lot of naked women. I didn't exactly hold a stopwatch to the film as it progressed, but I'd be willing to bet that not three minutes went by where we didn't see at least two or three different women showing off their body. If you think the nudity was abundant in other movies from this genre, you certainly haven't seen this one.
Now, you could get that from a late night skin-flick on Cinemax, so what sets this film apart from the rest? The shock value, plain and simple. There are a lot of scenes in here that push things pretty damned far, and in fact, there's one particular scene that may shock even the most hardcore movie fans. Let's see - we have not one but two dismembered penises (one of which is fed to a dog), hardcore sex scenes featuring both men and women (nothing is hidden from the camera), razorblades stuffed inside the female anatomy, and in a scene that may push the envelope just a little too far, three women rape a screaming prepubescent boy after brutally murdering his parents in front of him.
There's really not a whole lot more than can be said about the film at hand: you either like this thing or you don't and nothing I say here will sway your opinion. It's certainly not a date movie and it's not a very erotic film, but if you think that nothing is shocking in the world of cinema anymore, give this one a shot - it may just do the trick for you. However, there are also a lot (and I do mean a lot) of scenes where nothing happens other than the women showing us their boobs and bushes for the millionth time; while I certainly don't have a problem with gratuitous nudity, some variety would have been nice. With that said, I'm going to have to go with a 6/10 for the shock value and the moments of originality.
