Just as Corey Haim was starting to decline and just as Patricia Arquette was starting to take off, along came a little action film called "Prayer of the Rollerboys". The title sounds lame, I know, and the movie isn't exactly a classic, but it is a film I remember fondly from my youth. I, like most people, saw the film for the first time on VHS, and was around nine-years-old at its time of release. Of course, I was also still a little gay nine-year-old and had a great big crush on both Corey Haim and Christopher Collet. That said, as a kid -- I loved the hell out of this film.

In one of his last starring roles, Corey Haim plays Griffin, a former skating god who now delivers pizza to help take care of his little brother. They're not exactly the wealthiest kids in town. One of his old friends, Gary Lee (Christopher Collet) is the head of a new gang called The Rollerboys, who are engaged in more than a few sets of illegal activities. Gary Lee wants Griffin to join, but Griffin has left that life behind. He is eventually persuaded to join The Rollerboys by the police so he can keep track of them. So, Griffin becomes a mole for the authorities and infiltrates the gang, only to discover the price is far more dangerous than he ever imagined.

The film is directed by B-movie maestro Rick King, but was penned by W. Peter Illiff, who wrote "Point Break", "Patriot Games", "Varsity Blues" and "Under Suspicion". This must have been the one that slipped through the cracks. As a child, I loved this film -- I loved the chase sequences on the rollerskates and I loved the tension between Corey Haim and Christopher Collet -- probably because I wanted to see them do it. I remember disliking Patricia Arquette, even as a kid -- and I still don't think she could act her way out of a paper sack. These years later, I watch the film and feel nothing but nostalgia. The script is weak, the acting is mediocre, and the action sequences have that 'straight to video' feel that was dripping off films like this in the 1980's.

Watching it today, I still have a crush on Corey Haim and Christopher Collet -- but Corey Haim and Christopher Collet from 1991 -- not today. This film is usually able to be caught on cable at odd hours of the night, and I would recommend it if you have nothing else to watch, but it's not worth renting or purchasing. "Prayer of the Rollerboys" is a film I used to love, and now only slightly like. Eye candy aside, it doesn't have a prayer.

5/10.
