Jamie is a lonely and depressed and divorced young man who creates artificial flavorings until one day his life is hijacked by a series of random scenes in which he realizes that he is psychically linked to a beautiful young woman that he has never met. But when a violent image shakes him, Jamie decides to track down the woman and finds that her life is not all that it appears to be. --IMDb

The Masters of Horror series has been pretty hit or miss. Oddly enough, some of the finest horror directors out here have delivered utter drivel, while some b-list directors have surprised the hell out of us. Mick Garris -the brains behind this popular series- is responsible for most of the TV adaptations for Stephen King novels over the last 15 or so years. And as we all know, most of them are pretty awful. But being a creator and producer of your own series gives you the power to sit in the director's chair every now and again. I did a little research on this episode, as I tend to do before I sit down and watch a DVD. From what I've gathered, this was a season low point, and not many people liked it. A lot of the complaints were about the lack of gore, blood, etc. I love this in a movie, but I can also keep an open mind, so things like that are secondary to a decent story with some good acting and clever cinematography.

Recently divorced Jamie (Henry Thomas) works at Cougar Culinary Laboratories, creating artificial flavours. He begins waking up in the middle of the night with the taste of chocolate in his mouth, (hence the title of the episode). While attending a night club where his friend Wally (Matt Frewer), a self proclaimed "aging, failed rocker" is performing with his punk band The Chosen Ones, his hearing disappears. After panicking for a few minutes, it comes back as suddenly as it left. On the drive home that night, he again loses a sense, this time it's his sight. But instead of seeing only black, he sees a boardwalk, as if from the point of view of another person. His nightly rest is again plagued when he wakes up in the middle of the night, having hallucinations of a man hiding in the darkened corners of his apartment.

These hallucinations start happening more frequently, and becoming more vivid, which actually turns out to be pretty funny. Jamie gets the woman's POV while she has sex, and later when she masturbates with a showerhead, and each time he is locked in this orgasmic state until the woman is finished. Pretty embarrassing, especially when your ex-wife and son sneak up on you for a surprise visit. These visions take a nasty turn, when Jamie witnesses the woman kill her boyfriend in cold blood. Obsessed with finding this mystery woman, Jamie will stop at nothing to track her down, and put an end to everything.

The acting was, well, nothing spectacular. You can't expect much from a horror movie, let alone a horror TV show. The one thing that bugged the hell out of me was Matt Frewer. Him playing a "crazy aging rocker" really didn't work, and no matter what I see him in, he'll always be the dad from Honey, I Shrunk The Kids to me. Henry Thomas, who most of us know as Elliott from E.T. was kind of a letdown as well. I know he's a decent actor, as I've seen him turn in some decent performances over the years, but he didn't fit the part in this. He seemed awkward and his scenes felt way too forced. From a cinematic aspect, this episode was great. The camera work was smooth, and there were some great transitions between Jamie's reality and when he started feeling the woman's sensations. The sex scene and masturbation scene were both hilarious, but uncomfortable at the same time.

It wasn't the best in the series, but it certainly wasn't the worst. If this was the first episode I'd ever watched, I'd have my doubts, but it was still enjoyable. By the time the credits rolled I felt like I hadn't wasted the hour, and I guess that's really what counts.

7/10

This episode was really good... up until the end. It just seemed to be missing the final piece of the puzzle, almost as if the last five minutes got hacked off in the editing room. Very interesting premise, very good story, mediocre finale. 6/10.
