Horror parodies are nothing new, and in fact, parodies of those beloved eighties slashers are pretty far from original these days as well. That doesn't make them bad, mind you - after all, I love a good parody as much as the next guy, especially when they lovingly poke fun at a genre that I hold dear to my black little heart. However, that doesn't give them a free pass to a high rating, especially if it turns out that they don't really have a whole lot going for them. Such is the case with Bikini Bloodbath, although I do want to say right up front that it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Eighties slashers are notorious for having threadbare plots, and this particular parody takes that theme to a new level as there's really no plot here to speak of; in fact, even the selling point of the film (the killer) comes with no back-story and no explanations as he simply shows up and gets to work. The plot, if you can call it that, finds a group of girls having a slumber party complete with daiquiris, balloons, and streamers, while on the other side of town, the gayest football team that you'll ever meet decides to have a little slumber party of their own... complete with smores, balloons, streamers, and yes, even a riveting game of twister. The serial killer - a demented chef (Robert Cosgrove Jr.) who sports a meat cleaver as his weapon of choice - soon shows up and starts hacking the ladies to pieces, and we have ourselves a movie. Oh, and Debbie Rochon has a minor role as the lesbian volleyball coach who is constantly leering at and groping her students in what had to have been one of the best parts of the film, and it's a shame that she only lasted for about three scenes.

As one would expect from a film of this nature, all of the clichés of the eighties slasher film are on full display throughout the scant hour-long running time. We've got the obligatory shower scenes, the lesbian makeout sessions, the party montages, and yes, the filmmakers even found themselves an eighties-inspired hair metal band by the name of White Liger to do the soundtrack. There's plenty of gratuitous nudity and a number of kills at the hands of Chef's cleaver, so yes, it's obvious that the boys responsible for Bikini Bloodbath did a little bit of research into these films in an effort to replicate the experience.

The problem here is that the vast majority of the film simply isn't that funny, and as such, it comes across as just another one of those eighties slashers... only, without the things that made them so enjoyable. Oh, sure, there are some hilarious moments - I had more fun watching the gay football team than I did the ladies, in fact - but a lot of the content here simply falls flat. I have to believe that the main problem here was the ladies themselves, as while the guys in the audience will certainly agree that they're great to look at, they simply don't bring a whole lot to the table in terms of comedic timing or delivery, but to be fair, they're also not given a whole lot of material to work with either. As much as it pains my sexuality to say so, I have to say that this film probably would have been a whole lot more enjoyable had the entire thing focused on the gay football team as they held the potential for a true parody of the genre, and those guys were actually pretty damned funny to boot.

As far as the gore and kills go, well... Chef serves his purpose, but that's about it. I realize that, being a parody and all, the filmmakers weren't exactly trying to introduce a truly menacing or vicious character, but the kill methods we're given just seem a little weak with all things considered. One of the high points of those eighties slashers was the massive amounts of bloodshed and inventive kills, and with a character like this, we could have had some classic moments; instead, we simply get kill after kill that consists of a cleaver to the face / neck / side / chest with little bloodshed.

Overall, Bikini Bloodbath is an average film at best. It has its moments and there is some talent on display here, but the final product just didn't do a whole lot for me. I do have hope for the two sequels (yes, there are two sequels in the works), but this one simply wasn't a great way to kick things off. 5/10.

This sucked ass. It was boring as hell. I mean, the LONG musical filler scenes of useless shit (girls shopping, making daiquiris, guys dancing) left me sighing and checking the remaining time every time. As a parody this fails. It would have been better served making a softcore/slasher combination. Even if they release it as a censored R rated version a la Pirates. Also, the killer's gimmick was fucking retarded. 1/10 just for the high number of tit shots, and even those were all condensed in the first half of the movie.

Even though it's called Bikini Bloodbath, and has female nudity, I think this movie would actually be more appreciated by a gay audience than a straight one. Mainly because of the gay football team, and it's basically a homage to the Slumber Party Massacre series, which has a big gay following. And it also really campy, sort of a cross between a John Waters movie and a Troma movie. 8/10
