Connections: Terror Toons

In a quiet suburban neighborhood, two sisters are about to experience the dark and sinister world of Terror Toons. Candy and Cindy's parents have traveled out of town for the weekend leaving the two sisters home alone. Cindy receives a mysterious package in the mail with a free DVD cartoon sent to her by the Devil himself. Candy is having a house party with some friends while Cindy views the cartoon in her room. She unintentionally lets loose two homicidal cartoon characters, Dr. Carnage and Max Assassin. They are out of the cartoon dimension and into the world as we know it. The fiendish characters talk, torment and kill the party-goers in wild and kooky cartoon traditions. Cindy is the only one who has the power to stop the demented animations from continuing their insane murder spree. Can she save her friends? Can she save herself from the crazy mayhem?....or will everyone die? --IMDb

As we start things off, we find out that Candy (Lizzie Borden) and Cindy (Beverly Lynne) are going to be left home alone for the evening while their parents (Jack Roberts & Shimmy Maxx) attend a wedding. Candy decides to spend the evening watching a DVD entitled "Terror Toons" that arrived in the mail, while Cindy and her friend Amy (Kerry Liu) decide to call up some boys and have a small party. Rick (Brandon Reininger) and Eddie (Fernando Padilla) are the boys that they call up, and they waste little time in showing up. While trying to figure out how to spend the evening, the boys suggest a friendly game of strip poker, but the girls aren't having any of that... they'd rather play with the weeja (that's not a typo) board. A compromise is reached, and the four decide that a game of strip weeja is in order.

Meanwhile, Candy is watching her Terror Toons DVD upstairs. Think of an ultra-violent, even more over-the-top version of Itchy & Scratchy, and that's how the Terror Toons DVD plays out. Dr. Carnage (Matt Falletta), an evil doctor who specializes in banned pharmaceuticals, and his huge, mutated monkey of a sidekick Max Assassin (Scott Barrows) are the stars of the show, dispatching of humans in a number of gruesome ways. Candy is enjoying the show, but then, something goes terribly wrong... the Dr. Carnage and Max Assassin somehow escape the confines of the television and appear in Candy's room. With Satan himself (Jack Roberts) on their side, it seems as though the animated duo will have no problems in picking off our humanoid heroes... however, the humans have a cartoon cop (James Sullivan) on their side to even things up a bit. And so begins our movie, pitting these deranged, "animated to kill" characters up against our lovable, teenage heroes.

If the above description doesn't make it obvious enough, this movie falls more into the comedy genre than a horror. While there's a fair deal of gruesome and inventive killings with surprisingly great special effects for such a low budget film, this movie is a comedy at heart; in fact, one of the characters ends up dying of laughing too much during a scene that is just as humorous to the home viewer. The animated villains manage to make the viewer laugh in nearly all of the scenes that they appear in, and they never speak a word throughout the film... the comedy element comes strictly from their movements and the sound effects that they produce. To sum it all up, we witness six-and-a-half murders throughout the running time, each done in an inventive way with plenty of the red stuff, and the movie is funny as hell throughout. A damned fine combination, that is.

One of the things that makes the film work out so well is the excellent visuals. Now, they're pretty low-budget, so you would most likely disagree with me here if you've been spoiled by Hollywood's multi-billion dollar CGI effects. Yes, it's true that the effects wouldn't win any awards for realism, but they're done in such a unique and creative way that one can't help but to enjoy the work that went into them. The movie doesn't have a stitch of cartoon animation in it; there's not a single scene that isn't played out by a human actor. However, nearly everything is made to look as though it were a cartoon that one would expect to see on a Saturday morning lineup; the house is painted in bright, goofy colors, while the actors have small computer enhancements to make them look more animated. It's a bit difficult to describe, but the effect works out quite well and makes for some damned entertaining scenes.

Overall, this is a must-view if you're a fan of films that flawlessly mix horror and comedy into one great feature film. The only group of people that I'd recommend skip this one are those who can't tolerate a low-budget movie with some amateur actors and actresses in the lead roles. While the acting isn't bad, they certainly wouldn't win any awards for their performances here (although, Lizzie Borden does come damned close to taking the "hottest female ever" award away from Misty Mundae). You can tell that they put a lot of effort into their parts though, and that more than makes up for it. A classic, and a highly-recommended film from yours truly. 8/10.

This movie was so cheesy, but good fun. I liked the gore and the comedy.........and the "acting". Apparently there is a sequel that I will have to view. 7/10 for me.
