Framed by interviews with real life celebrities, Hollywood Mortuary tells the tale of a horror make-up artist who, in 1941 Hollywood, uses voodoo to resurrect two rival horror stars (thinly disguised versions of Karloff and Lugosi) from the dead to help revive his fading career. --TMDb

A story about Hollywood trying to get rid of horror movies and bring in ones that deal with real life. What excellent timing this movie had, even though it was released five years ago. Throw in a make-up artist resurrecting the dead, and you're on the path to an awesome zombie movie. The movie starts out with middle to elderly aged folks, that had some connection to Dawn, telling about what they knew of him. Then it hits black and white and transforms into Dawn watching the Voodoo Priestess dance around, scream, and get naked for the next six minutes. The movie fades off and on into the people giving their thoughts on the certain actions Dawn had taken and what not (which were in color). These parts of the movie weren't too long, but still incredibly uninteresting.

After a half hour of Dawn crying about the horror genre leaving the movies, the connections blabbing, the movie starts to get upbeat. Dawn kills a fellow he worked with after denying Dawn help on his project to bring back horror films. The first gore scene of the movie, which I noticed was in color. Dawn managed to get himself a job as a mortician and brought back the person he killed, along with another fellow who died earlier in the film. With these two zombies in his control, he tells them to go out and scare people.

Instead of the scaring, they decide to go on a rampage with some very exquisite methods of killing with all the gore scenes in color. Which was quite the original idea on the screenwriters part. One place they stop in for a killing in some sort of club. There was a comedian and at the same time, loud music jamming with people dancing, and others enjoying a romantic deal. I don't know if this was suppose to be some kind of gag, or just some really retarded recreation of a 40's shindig. Whichever the case, it was not impressive. The movie carried on with its killings (one of the best being a fat woman getting gutted) and a few more zombies coming and going.

Other than Dawn turning his 'preppy rich white guy' persona into a gigantic fat queer, the off and on commentaries from the connections, at times - pitch black blood, and the first thirty minutes, it was a watchable film. The black and white film converting to color when ever someone was getting murdered impressed me a lot. Such a simple effect, yet not many, if anyone, has done it before. I'm always a fan of gore, which this movie had plenty of. The story line also impressed me a good deal. Anyone that can stand incredibly low budget gory horror films, this one's for you.
