I saw Thor on its opening night and didn't think much of the movie. I'm not going to say that I was angry at the film or demanded my money back because I was entertained, but there was a problem. I wasn't shocked to hear that its opening week it did very well because all of these comic book movies seem to, but it was the comments on how it was the best movie of the year that made me scratch my head. Like I said, it entertained me, but movie of the year? I must have seen a different movie or maybe I was distracted by the hillbilly couple next to me laughing at every joke while they coughed up their cigarettes.

First, the story of Thor. We have our hero, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the strong but dimwitted God of Thunder who wields a huge hammer and, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), the clever but suspicious brother. Thor is to be crowned King and take the throne after his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), steps down. However, some ice giants have broken into their kingdom and Thor isn't too happy with that, so Thor, his brother, and group of trusted allies go to the ice giant's world and decide to fight them. Well, Odin isn't pleased after hearing about them breaking the treaty and banishes Thor down to earth. As Thor crashes down to our world he is found by a group of astrophysicists, Jane (Natalie Portman), Erik (Stellan Skarsgard), and Darcy (Kat Dennings). Things are looking bad for Thor now that he is human and can't use his hammer. What's a God to do?

The story is pretty cut and dry. Thor is arrogant and basically acts like a child, so he must learn from his mistakes so he can get his powers back. What made me chuckle though was the fact that the time spent on earth was only a matter of a few days. So, he learned his lesson and Portman's character fell in love with him in about a week, maybe? They really leave no time for any real character build up and the dialogue is full of crappy clichés that it made me gag in a few scenes.

As far as acting goes there were some good and there was some bad. When it came to the acting for the Gods, Hemsworth, Hiddleston and Hopkins were good. The Gods are made to feel they are above all, they are wise and lived longer than most galaxies, so it's ok to be a little cocky. They may seem cheesy, but if you read any of the comics or lore of these characters they actually do act like this. The bad, however, was all on the human side of things. Portman's character didn't seem like a scientist at all, but instead portrayed a giggling cheerleader gawking at the quarter back. Dennings was our tacky one liner and Skarsgard was your typical father figure in the whole mix that left me rolling my eyes.

The CGI may seem laughable at times, the colors to me were odd or out of place, but it is what really made the film entertaining. I'm sure those who saw it in 3D in IMAX screen really got a treat out of the movie, but I saw it in primitive 2D and I'm sure it brought the quality down for me. Also, there weren't really any amazing choreographed fight scenes. Thor has the typical kick ass and take names attitude in here.

Overall: if you are expecting a movie that has good character development and an intriguing storyline, don't watch this movie. Superhero movies like Iron Man, Spider Man and the X-Men did very well because of that, but Thor is lacking in it. Now, if you want to dumb your brain down for a few hours, I'm sure you will be pretty satisfied with this film. I wouldn't recommend watching it in the theaters, but it's good enough to rent and share a bowl of popcorn with someone. 5/10.

Loved the shit out of this. Alittle bit too much high-camp at places, which felt weird against the obviously expensive movie, but it was damned fun.

I've never been a big fan of Thor, but this was fairly entertaining. Certainly not the best superhero flick out there, but enjoyable all the same. 7/10.
