Casey Jones is the story of a quirky young man with an irresistible propensity for violence. A lifelong outcast, Casey learned at a young age to channel his brutal urges into sports, but after being kicked off the local hockey team for excessive force during practice, Casey moves back in with his worrisome mother to seek solace at his boyhood home. His retreat is soon interrupted though when a vicious gang of street punks, the Purple Dragons, savagely beat him with pipes for attempting to remove their graffiti. After narrowly escaping the encounter with his life, Casey vows to single-handedly rid his neighborhood of crime. Armed with a golf bag loaded with clubs and sporting a fearful hockey mask, Casey stalks the alleyways by night, mercilessly trouncing any delinquents unlucky enough to cross his path. The misguided crusader soon goes off the deep end, and an unlikely ally from the sewers is forced to intervene before the vigilante annihilates every criminal in the city. --IMDb

In the Ninja Turtles' franchise, Casey Jones has always been one of the more popular characters, despite being more on the secondary level. Given that, it's no surprise that he'd be the main focus of his own film sooner or later, even if it was a fan film.

Casey Jones is a fairly easy man to describe: extremely unmotivated and prone to excessive violence. After he's kicked off of his hockey team for injuring two of his own teammates in as many minutes, he moves in with his mother in a run down part of town, beating a young punk spray painting her door on his way in. As he's cleaning the graffiti that night, the punk returns with his gang in tow and beats him nearly to death. As Casey recuperates, he studies news reports (by one April O'Neil of course, clad in bright yellow jumpsuit) about his neighborhood and learns that it's completely overrun by gangs. It's enough to finally give the man some motivation in life; he fills his golf bag with baseball bats, cricket bats and hockey sticks, throws on a hockey mask and sets out to clean up the streets. He's extremely good at what he does, but his violent actions catches the attention of nunchuk-wielding Michaelangelo.

I loved the way they portrayed Casey here. Simply put, the man is a total fucking sociopath. Early on, he has no qualms about "ending" an argument with his cousin by knocking him out with a hockey stick, and when he actually gets down to business his maliciousness borders on the level of the very same thugs he's taking out, actively mocking the terrified punks before bludgeoning them to death. Hilarion Banks, brother of writer/director Polaris, shows without a doubt that his casting was not mere nepotism. His happy-go-lucky casual attitude before beating a man's skull in with a baseball bat was incredibly well done, and went a long way in defining the character. In yet another callback to a previous adaptation, he channels Elias Koteas beautifully while still making the character his own. The only complaint I had with Jones is his mask; it just looked a little too home made for me. It was a bit to big for his face, and the texture resembled paper mache more than the usual fiberglass .

On the other hand, the Michaelangelo costume looked damned good. Obviously, it's not on the same level as Henson's turtles from the trilogy, but it was a lot better than I expected it was going to be. In fact, I only had two complaints about the costume. For starters, the mouth could have used some better articulation, but obviously the budget wasn't there to go all out with it. Also, I wasn't crazy about the eyes either. Banks elected to go with the solid white style the comics used, but while that may work in animated adaptations, it just looks silly when used in a live-action film. Obviously, these are relatively minor issues and watching Mikey take on Foot soldiers (led by a villain that, while well known, is almost always overlooked. Once again, I was cheering at my monitor) there was no way I could get the grin off my face. Costume aside, you know what the best part about Casey Jones' Michaelangelo is? Banks was able to secure none other than Robbie Rist, the voice of the character in the original film trilogy, to provide his voice for a fourth time. I've always said that nostalgia is nothing more than a novelty, but I popped hard over this little throwback.

Casey Jones was an amazing piece of work. While I know these things don't come cheap, if Banks has any interest in making a sequel I'll be first in line. You can watch the movie for free on its web site, but a twenty dollar donation will be rewarded with a DVD of the film; well worth it to help that sequel, hopefully with all four turtles, become a reality sooner rather than later. 9/10.
