Zombeavers is an action-packed horror/comedy in which a group of college kids staying at a riverside cabin are menaced by a swarm of deadly zombie beavers. A weekend of sex and debauchery soon turns gruesome as the beavers close in on the kids. Riding the line between scary, sexy and funny, the kids are soon fighting for their lives in a desperate attempt to fend off the hoard of beavers that attack them in and around their cabin. --IMDb

Zombeavers. For the slower readers out there, that's a portmanteau of "zombie" and "beavers", which is exactly what you're going to get here: zombie beavers. That alone should tell you that the movie doesn't take itself very seriously, so you should already have a pretty good idea as to whether or not this is going to be something that is worth tracking down for your viewing pleasure. Now, while I understood that it was going to be a goofy film before I even hit play, I wasn't sure about how well it would actually work. I mean, zombie beavers? Really? However, being a sucker for cheesy zombie flicks, I simply couldn't pass it up. The resulting film actually surprised me.

The storyline is simple: two slacker delivery drivers accidentally lose a canister of goo in a remote lake, and said goo infects the local beaver population, turning them into the aforementioned zombie beavers. It also infects the other wildlife, resulting in a freaking zombear, and if you sit through the credits, a sequel is teased with zombees. Of course, the beavers are the stars of the show here, and our heroines for the evening quickly discover this. You see, a trio of sorority girls - Mary (Rachel Melvin), Zoe (Cortney Palm), and Jenn (Lexi Atkins) - are heading out for a weekend wilderness retreat, and what do you know: the zombie beavers just so happen to be hanging out in the nearby lake. The girls are eventually joined by their boyfriends Sam (Hutch Dano), Tommy (Jake Weary), and Buck (Peter Gilroy), but what should have been a weekend of booze, boobs, and boning soon turns into a fight for survival... with zombie beavers. God, I just love typing those two words. Anyway, if that wasn't enough, we also discover that the disease infecting those beavers is contagious, resulting in something called beaver fever... which basically means that we wind up with human beaver zombie hybrids that hunt and kill their human prey. Could it get any worse?

Obviously, this is not a film that takes itself too terribly seriously, as if the synopsis didn't give it away. However, if you can get past that blatant silliness, there's actually a solid horror film here. Sure, it's pretty hard to take zombie beavers seriously, but they actually prove to be a legitimate threat to the heroes and we wind up with some intense scenes as a result. The idea is as campy as it gets, but if the concept piques your interest, you will get a good night of entertainment out of it. Much like the Sharknado series, it's a movie that tells you everything that you need to know right there in the title, and if you're alright with that, you'll find a lot to love. It's like a throwback to the campy horror flicks of the eighties, and all of the staples are here: plenty of blood, a generous helping of beasts, and of course, what eighties throwback would be complete without some boobs?

Aiding my enjoyment was the special effects used for the beavers themselves. They actually look really good, with mostly practical effects used to bring them to life. The same can be said for the zombie beaver humans, as well as the ensuing gore when someone is torn apart or ripped to shreds. There are a few moments of CGI effects sprinkled throughout, but nothing overly distracting - the vast majority is practical latex and liquids, and the gorehounds will love it. Trust me: beavers are known for their teeth and for gnawing through wood, so you can imagine what they will do to human flesh. Again, if it sounds like something that would be up your alley, you won't be let down.

Hell, I can even say that I enjoyed the cast in the movie, which is not something I usually expect from a movie like this. Cortney Palm in particular is great as the smartass "bimbo" of the bunch, and she managed to steal a couple of scenes with her lines and delivery. There's also Rex Linn in a smaller role as the "I warned you to stay away" hunter who shows up at all the right times in order to lend a helping hand, and he too stole a handful of scenes. Both of these cast members brought something special to the table, but the rest of the people involved were perfectly acceptable in their roles. They may not have stood out as much, but they served their purposes and they did so convincingly.

If you couldn't tell by now, this one is getting a recommendation from me. It's not fine art and it's not a horror classic, but if you want some cheesy horror with a touch of eighties throwback, sprinkled liberally with blood, boobs, and beasts, you won't go wrong with this one. There are some laugh-out-loud moments, there are some cringe-inducing kills, and the entire concept just worked out beautifully. Pick it up. 8/10.
