The Troma Team is proud to present The Ruining, a striking new work by filmmaker Chris Burgard. Filmed over ten years, The Ruining succeeds in echoing the grime and grit of late 70's and early 80's horror cinema. Traditional family values are disturbingly challenged when two Los Angeles couples run into trouble on a remote mountain camping trip. Thirty years ago government drilling poisoned the water in a small town. Half of the town died. Those that are left are horribly addicted to psychedelic eggs bred by old Henry Behrens. When the strangers enter into his domain the stage is set for selective breeding and feeding of human flesh. Henry's 17-year-old daughter Becky is beautiful and thinks that she is a German shepherd. --IMDb

After a son gets whipped by his father, he runs to his sister to help deliver a baby, their baby. The day after it was born, the father and son drive through the mountains. When the baby wouldn't stop crying, the father grabbed it and threw it out of the car. A lonely chicken breeder, Henry, found the baby and took care of it as his own. Twenty years later, two siblings and their significant others plan a trip to those very mountains. The characters include David and his sister Sandra, David's wife Megan, Sandra's husband Cody. On the way to the mountains, they stop at a local bar. While the two ladies are in the bathroom, David gets his hands on an egg. The eggs around these parts are like drugs due to the contamination of government drilling years before.

While David is tripping on the egg, Cody starts giving one of the strippers money. It ends up being one of the town locals sister. Virgil, the brother, starts a fight with Cody in the bar. Cody kicks him in the crotch and manages to get away. As they're driving away, Virgil gets on his dirt bike and starts chasing them with a gun. Cody manages to drive him off a cliff. When him and his wife check on him, his leg is broken. Sandra tries to help him, but he picks up his gun to shoot the two. Cody stomps on his neck, killing him. Now with the group in danger, Cody decides now would be a good time to show David how to shoot a gun. David aims at a rock, fires, and manages to hit Cody's truck. Putting a hole in the radiator, they have but no choice to hike to the freeway.

Night falls and they have to set-up camp. During everyone's sleep, Megan wakes up Cody to have sex with him. After they're finished, Sandra sees Megan going back to her sleeping chambers. Sandra says nothing as she goes back to sleep. They continue their hike in the morning and stumble across an old house. He invites them in for dinner and is asked a bunch of questions. He lives in the house with a female named Rita, which ends up being his dog. Along with his daughter, Becky. The group meets Becky that night as she starts sniffing everyone while they're sleeping. Henry comes outside to retrieve Becky, then brings her inside.

Megan once again awakes in the middle of the night to have sex with Cody. They get busted by David as he pulls a gun on Cody. Cody tackles him and gets the gun away from him. As David trails off, Sandra wakes up and has no idea what just happened. When she goes to find David, Cody decides it would be best if he go find him, so she doesn't inform his sister that her husband was cheating on her. The two begin to fight once again, Cody again comes out the victor. When Cody goes back to the house, he finds some tools in Henry's garage that will fix his truck. He takes them and makes his way back to the truck. On his way, he ends up fighting a zombified Virgil. While that's happening, the three left at the house have to struggle against Henry and his daughter.

All four of the main characters were very stereotypical. Cody was the jock, David was the nerd, Sandra was very sensitive, Megan was the slut. The acting was about average, it was just the characters that brought it down a lot. The first half hour of the film was very interesting. A man threw a baby out of a car, a cowboy brought his daughter into town and gave her away to one of the men, some men had hallucinations from the eggs, there was a fight, then a road chase with a hillbilly on a dirt bike and a jock in a truck, then the hillbilly died. It was all downhill after that. The only thing that happened was the group kept finding out weird and unpleasant things. Henry's daughter gets treated like a dog, Megan and Cody are having an affair, David's tired of Cody's actions, Henry's a psycho. Very boring.

Some of the few good parts of the film were when someone would take a bite out of an egg and they would start to trip. The person would start to see odd things, then he would be in front of all of the things he was seeing, as his hallucinations were displayed behind him. When Virgil flew off the cliff, there was a close of his broken leg. The bone was sticking out and bleeding a good amount, it looked really well put together. David also got more than he bargained for when he tricked Becky into giving him oral pleasure by rubbing food on his nether regions. As she's going to work on him, she bites it off. Very bloody as he eventually dies from blood loss. The film continues to be watchable after the first half due to hope that there will be more violence and cruelty.

Final Conclusion: 4/10
