Connections: House Of 1000 Corpses

Nearly seven long months after the night of terror and carnage in House of 1000 Corpses, the unhinged siblings of the deranged Firefly family--the gun-toting, Otis, and his blood-lusting sister, Baby--reunite with the equally brutal clown from Hell, Captain Spaulding. With the obsessive Sheriff Wydell hot on their trail, the murderous trio heads to their father's old friend, Charlie, in search of shelter, brutalizing innocent hostages on their way. Now, the dead demand revenge, and as the man of the law decides to take matters into his own hands, the bodies pile up. When the Fireflies walk, death follows. Hail, Hail, Rob Zombie! I have been waiting years for this kind of balls to the wall horror film. Rob Zombie has delivered a road movie for the ages, filled with blood, sex, death, carnage, and just about everything unseemly you can imagine in your safe and secure little head. He has created a nightmare on film -- one of the most brutally violent films I have ever seen, yet still littered with that trademark Zombie wit. If the Devil's Rejects aren't brutally hacking someone to death with a sharp wooden club, they are laughing and dancing and demanding ice cream stops. By doing this, he does something that is just amazing -- he turns the Devil's Rejects into antagonists and protagonists at the same time. We find ourselves rooting for these malicious murderers to get away -- thus, we are rooting for them to kill more people as brutally as possible. This does not mean that we are all murderers, at heart, but it does mean that we certainly have a craving for violence and bloodshed. Whether or not you liked "House of 1,000 Corpses", this film speaks for itself. It is an experience in horror...an experience in just how much dirty violence that senses can stand before they shut down. Most can handle more than they would think.

This picture picks up where "House of 1,000 Corpses" left off. We find the family of killers asleep in their beds when they are unexpectedly raided by the Ruggsville Police Department, led by the Gospel spouting Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe). By the end of the showdown, one member of the family is killed. Mother Firefly (Leslie Easterbrook) is captured by the police and taken into custody. Otis (Bill Moseley) and Baby (Sheri Moon Zombie) are the only escapees of the siege, and they embark on a journey to an old motel in the middle of the desert. They first, however, alert Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig) of the events and he plans to meet them there. While at the hotel, the two fugitives take hostage a band of traveling musicians known as Banjo & Sullivan's and turn their musical lives into a neat little nightmare. All the while, Sheriff Wydell is plotting his revenge against the family, who killed his brother George years before. The family eventually end up at the home of Captain Spaulding's brother Charlie (Ken Foree), where the final showdown takes place. Danny Trejo and Diamond Dallas Page star as two hired assassins paid by the Sheriff. So, that is the basic storyline behind "The Devil's Rejects".

If violence is what you seek as a movie goer, look no further than "The Devil's Rejects". This is truly one of the most violent films in the history of cinema. This is what "A Texas Chainsaw Massacre" would have been, if it had the same kind of liberty as Zombie did with this picture. There are brutal beatings, hellacious gun battles, people having 'fun' with corpses, scenes of intense sexual gratification, and various other taboos that still manage to make it on screen. I do not see how this film was not given an NC-17 rating -- it is so obviously deserving of one, and that would probably be an honor for a film like this. One of the most disturbing scenes involves Otis returning to the motel with the skinned face of a man he has just killed. He then decides it would be fun to put the skinned face on the girlfriend of the deceased. If that sounds shocking, it is twice as grotesque to watch on screen, yet it somehow doesn't shock us in the way we think it should. Maybe, after seeing "House of 1,000 Corpses", it just takes more to get under our skin, especially from someone like Rob Zombie. However, with this film, Zombie has proven himself as a credible filmmaker, even if his films do border on the too difficult to watch category.

What most will notice about this film is that is just looks better than "House of 1,000 Corpses". The storyline is more coherent and far more interesting. The insertion of the country band was brilliant, and they help add a little depth to the film, as does William Forsythe, as over-the-top as ever as Sheriff Wydell, though he becomes the perfect antagonist to the team of antagonists. Did you ever think you would find someone more disgusting than the Firefly Family? Forsythe is just plain raunchy and mean as the sheriff and delivers with every scene. There is also a nice scene with him involving a film critic being called in to find a connection between the family's aliases and Groucho Marx. What results is a heated battle between a film lover and a defender of Elvis. It was absolutely hilarious and a nice addition, humor wise, to the film. It was also nice to see Leslie Easterbrook (from "Police Academy" fame) as Mother Firefly, though Karen Black was sorely missed. I think, in order to fully appreciate this film, you have to understand just what Rob Zombie was setting out to do. I do. You should.

"The Devil's Rejects" is a hellacious roller-coaster ride through the most obscene and grotesque situations imaginable, and I loved every bloody, disturbing second of it. I hope Zombie finds someway to continue the franchise. As cheaply as he turns these films out, there is certainly a market for them. This film surprised me in ways I had not expected, and it is one of the best horror films of the year. If for nothing else, the soundtrack is worth the price of admission -- Zombie really outdid himself. This is a complete 180 from "House of 1,000 Corpses", but in a good...better...way. The easily offender should just stay away altogether, and the slightly offended should consider "The Bad News Bears" instead. Don't go in expecting just another cheesy horror movie -- you will walk out with a hand full of vomit and a stomach full of regret.

9/10

The movie takes itself alot more serious than the previous. Rob matured as a director and god damn what a product. I've seen it twice and will probably see it two more times. One of the things I liked most about DR is the attitude change of the Firefly clan. As I said earlier, Rob matured and so did the charcters. Baby wasn't the annoying doll; Otis was less of a Charles Manson recreation and Capt. Spaulding rarely wore his make up. LOVED the movie. 10/10

I've noticed that B. Ray (bluemeanie) and myself disagree on a lot of movies. Nothing personal, but that's just the way it goes. Normally, if I disagreed with him, I'd write my own review as a sort of counter-point, but here, I agree with everything he has said and I would just be rehashing his statements. 10/10.

This was SOOOooo far from House of 1000 Corpses, it dosent feel like a sequel at all. But that being said its still an amazing movie. The best word to describe this movie is GRITTY. You feel a bit dirty after watching it. Certainly not lighthearted fun this time arround.
