I've said it before, and I'll say it again: nobody does sick and twisted quite like the Japanese. Sure, we've got movies where people have to saw off their own limbs in order to escape a madman's traps and we've got women who love to bathe in the blood of teenagers, but this is child's play compared to some of the shit that comes out of the Land of the Rising Sun. This brings us to Beautiful Girl Hunter, a film where incest is the norm, bestiality is a novel concept, rape is completely commonplace, and necrophilia is just another way to pass some time. Now, consider that this was a fairly big budget film that comes complete with slick production values and relatively big name stars, and I think you'll agree that it's pretty obvious that those Japanese folks sure love their violence. Oh, and did I mention that this was released in 1979, back before this sort of thing was the norm over here in America? How about the fact that this isn't a film that stands on its own, but instead, it's merely another release in the rather large genre devoted to this sort of thing?

We begin our story back in the fifties, and the first thing we see is a man breaking into a wealthy couple's house with robbery on his mind. He decides to have a little fun with his captives, though, and his idea of fun consists of tying the woman up and raping her while her husband is forced to watch. The rapist and the rape victim eventually climax together, and this monster of a man then proceeds to calmly gather his ill-gotten goods and leave. What he leaves behind is a woman pregnant with his child and a husband who now takes great delight in both beating and humiliating his wife for disrespecting him by climaxing with this stranger, and then...

...fast-forward twenty years, where we meet a young guy named Tatsuya who has some serious mental issues. Yes, Tatsuya is the bastard son of this woman who has long since died, and although he's quite wealthy thanks to his stepfather having also died, he still has some issues that need tending to: namely, he's obsessed with Hitler's views on extermination, even going so far as to masturbate to pictures of Holocaust victims. Oh, and he also enjoys kidnapping young women so that he may practice these views of his, but not before he rapes and abuses them in grisly ways. There's a little more to the storyline, but that's treading into spoiler territory; besides, do you really need to know anything more to make up your mind as to whether or not to check this out?

It'd be easy to write this off as just another film that attempts to shock the audience by displaying one taboo subject after the other, but surprisingly, there's an honest-to-goodness storyline in here, and it even culminates in a - dare I say it - touching romance angle. Sure, this man may enjoy kidnapping high school students and pop singers so that he can have his way with them, but even someone like him has a soft side; that's the moral of the story, and that is what this entire thing builds up to. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this twist as these types of films are normally nothing more than about sixty or seventy minutes of gratuitous violence and sex scenes, but this one broke that mold.

Now, that's not to say that this is a romantic date movie that you'll want to break out while wooing your new girlfriend. The violence alone is pretty graphic, but it's nothing compared to some of the ways that Tatsuya humiliates and abuses his victims. Of course, there's also the whole rape thing that repeatedly takes place with just about every woman who shows her face to the camera throughout the running time, so needless to say, you're probably going to want to wait until at least the second date to spring this one on the little lady.

Fans of this sort of thing should definitely check out Beautiful Girl Hunter; it's certainly one of the better films that I've come across from this bizarre little subgenre, as it managed to deliver the staples - violence, abuse, and T&A - while also bringing a decent little storyline to the table. That's a rare combination, but I'm happy to report that the movie known as Fuck or Die in some markets pulled it off successfully. 8/10.
