Two lovable hillbillies are headed to their "fixer-upper" vacation cabin to drink some beer, do some fishin', and have a good time. But when they run into a group of preppy college kids who assume from their looks that they must be in-bred, chainsaw-wielding killers, Tucker & Dale's vacation takes a bloody and hilarious turn for the worse. --IMDb

It's very rare that I will flat out gush about a movie, but Tucker and Dale vs Evil is going to be one of those movies. Quite simply, I fucking loved every minute of it. This is one of those rare movies that is perfect in every way, and honestly, you should just stop reading this right now and go pick up a copy of your own. Trust me, you won't regret it.

I'm not sure how much of the storyline I want to spoil, because this is really one of those movies where the less you know, the better. However, for those of you on the fence, the story begins with a group of college kids led by Chad (Jesse Moss) and his potential girlfriend Allison (Katrina Bowden) heading out to the middle of Hicksville, Virginia for a weekend of camping in the woods with a little skinny-dipping, premarital sex, and illegal drugs thrown in for good measure. Unfortunately for all involved, things take a turn for the worse when Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine), a couple of good ol' boys with a penchant for Pabst Blue Ribbon and fishing, emerge from their decrepit old cabin in the woods.

There's a catch here though. You see, our redneck friends are simply out here trying to fix their vacation home up while enjoying a little "guy time", and they are as far from serial killers as one could get. Hell, Dale can't even bring himself to hurt the fish that they're catching. However, when Allison bumps her head and almost drowns in the nearby lake, the boys are there to rescue her... and all the college kids see are two backwoods hillbillies dragging her "lifeless" body onto their boat. They believe that they are all going to die out here, when really, Tucker and Dale just wanted to help the poor girl. The college kids decide to get the rednecks before the rednecks get them, and... well, as Tucker likes to put it, it quickly becomes a doozy of a day.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil is to the "maniacal redneck(s) in the woods" slasher flick what Shaun of the Dead was to the zombie film. It is a legitimate horror film with plenty of bloodshed and tension, but there are also lots of laughs and countless respectful nods to the genre that it is parodying. There is an homage to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre that had me in tears, and that is but one of the many great scenes in this film.

What makes it work so well is the chemistry between Tucker and Dale. These guys, much like Shaun and Ed in the aforementioned Shaun of the Dead, come across as legit best friends instead of actors in a movie, and they play off of one another perfectly. Watching them bicker with one another was a treat, and I can safely say that I could watch an entire movie with nothing more than them fixing up that cabin and bullshitting with one another. Their timing was perfect, their lines were hilarious, and I'd love to see them back together again in a sequel.

Adding to the goodness is how well the storyline played out. It may seem like a sketchy idea on paper, but the filmmakers nailed it. Everything that happens is believable and convincing, and it just goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover. Also, it was refreshing to see the "killer hillbillies" tale told from the other perspective, which sort of sheds new light on some of those older films in the genre; I mean, after all, Buddy was just trying to protect his hogs in Slaughterhouse, right? It was just one big misunderstanding, you know?

Tucker and Dale vs Evil gets an emphatic thumbs up from me, and I simply can not recommend it enough. It is hilarious, it is bloody, it's a great homage to the slasher flicks of old, and above all else, it was the best time I've had in front of the television in a very long time. 10/10, a perfect film in every way.
