Irving Klaw is a man who got his start selling pictures of Hollywood celebrities in the forties before eventually finding out that smut sells far better than "normal" celebrity photographs. He started to focus on softcore, pin-up, and fetish work (photographs and 8mm videos), and by the mid-fifties, he was known as the "King of the Pin-Up" thanks to his massive body of work. However, all good things must come to an end, and this end came by way of the "Kefauver Hearings" of the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency. I won't go into all of the details here (there's plenty of reading material available online for those interested), but basically, Mr. Klaw was accused of being one of the leading causes of juvenile delinquency due to his work. He eventually quit the business and burned all of his negatives, with only about twenty percent of his work surviving the destruction thanks to his sister Paula hiding them.

The first volume of the Irving Klaw Classics collection focuses on Bettie Page, one of the most recognizable pin-up models of all time. Irving Klaw did a lot of work with her, and chances are pretty good that a large chunk of the pictures and movies you've seen containing Mrs. Page were shot by Klaw. So then, what better way to kick off the collection than with sixteen of his Bettie Page movies?

Well, there's actually twelve of these movies in the feature presentation and there's four to be found in the bonus features section, but a Page film is a Page film and they're all here. One thing that does separate the films found in the bonus section is the fact that they're a bit more risqué than the ones found in the "main" section; in fact, a couple of them feature Mrs. Page topless, a bit of a rarity outside of her still photographs.

The DVD transfers of these films are decent enough considering the source material and what could have happened to the negatives. Some of them fare worse than others in the quality department, but for the most part, they're perfectly adequate and shouldn't receive any complaints from the fans. They also feature a soundtrack courtesy of Cult Epics, with music ranging from classic to piano to honky-tonk.

Overall, this hour-long DVD is a good deal for fans of Bettie Page, and although this is the only film I've watched from the Irving Klaw Classics collection as of this writing, the set is looking pretty good thus far. 7/10.
